WELLINGTON, April 16. “ I regard the offence of escaping from custody as a serious one,” said the'magistrate, when a young man, Eric Steadman, who appeared in prison clothes, admitted escaping from Mount Crawford prison. Sub-inspector Lopdell said the accused was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment last July on a charge of vagrancy. He was working with a gang when he made good his escape and remained at liberty until arrested a day later. — . The magistrate sentenced the accused to a year’s imprisonment, to he served at the expiration of his present term.
