BROADSIDING.
ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL MEETING. PEARCE RIDES BRILLIANTLY. TRACK AND LAP RECORDS BROKEN. Another successful broadsiding meeting was held, on- the Speedway Royal last evening, when a crowd of about 8000 enthusiasts watched a night’s racing which, although interesting, was marred by a series of unfortunate mishaps, which took their toll of the machines to such an extent, that the ranks of the competitors in some of the finals and in the match races were sadly depleted. _ The only rider to be injured was C. Perabo, who, whilst trying out a strange machine prior to the commencement of the meeting, hit the grass near the top bend, and crashed badly. He was removed to Hospital in an unconscious condition, and at a late hour last night he had not regained consciousiness. L. Van Praag made a re-appearance, and showed that he has lost none of his brilliancy by giving a dashing display in every race in which he rode. Whittle’s riding was just as daring and skilful asever,- but his machine appeared to have developed a temperament, and ran very badly ■ throughout the ’evening. Bennish also made a return to the Dunedin track, and, as usual, rode consistently, F. Pearce, without doubt one of the most brilliant riders yet seen in Dunedin, pleased the’crowd immensely with his intrepid riding in the Open Handicap, and he also received an enthusiastic ovation after clipping 2 4-ssec off Skyd Perkyns’s track record of 84.2-sscc, and incidentally, during the ’attempt, breaking Miss Fay Taylour’s lap record of 21 l-sscc. His lap times were 20 2-ssec, 20 3-ssec, 20 l-ssec, and 20 2-ssec, so that he shattered the lap record on every circuit.
