Hagen . and Kirkwood wore subjected to a‘thorough test when the local professionals, Fred -Popplewell and Don Spence, played brilliantly in a 36-holcs niatcli at the Australian Golf Club’s course at Kensington to-day. Hagen lost his normal accuracy after burning his left thumb, which caused him excruciating pain. Kirkwood played gloriously throughout, ut the team work of the Australians was superior and consistent. Popplewell in the afternoon displayed the finest putting in his career. Fifteen hundred people followed the players. The weather and course were excellent. The conditions were a fourball over 30 holes, with a side wr-er of £250. The profits of the match wont to the Sydney Hospital. Harrison, the Killara Club champion, and Clark, its professional, won the match 1 up. Features were Clark’s excellent round of 70, his local knowledge obviously helping considerably He also gave a great display on the greens. Kirkwood also went “round in 10, but it took him until halfway through the. journey to find the pace of the greens. Then he became too stron ,r and on several greens took three puttT. He and Whitton were down three at the thirteenth but won the fourteenth fifteenth and sixteenth to square the match at the seventeenth. Kirkwood drove out of bounds. Clark won the hole, and the eighteenth was halved. Whitton was in poor form and was out of touch with the ast greens. He was of little assistance to lus partner.
