THE HAYDOCK EXPLOSION
HEROIC WOMAN DOCTOR. TRIBUTE BY COLLEAGUE. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, February 28. A woman doctor, named Winifred. Bridge, is praised for her heroism in the Haydock explosion. She assisted Dr Dowling, whom she accompanied below, facing risks and horrors composedly. It was bad travelling through the workings for a woman, but Dr Bridge crouched down, and was led along and fixed up a surgery 100 yards from the scene of the explosion and began ministering to. the injured as they struggled to her, “ She was splendid,” said Dr Dowling. “She is a fine, athletic girl, and kept her head. The fumes were terrible,'and the men suffered from gas, and others were frightfully burned. Dr Bridge worked hard. I think she is the first woman to have been in these circumstances.”
The roar of an explosion, which was heard afar, sent hundreds of womenfolk hurrying to the pit head at Haydock, Lancashire. Rescuers found flames shooting along the galleries, which were filled with fumes, causing the men to collapse. Five were killed and 25 badlv burned. A woman doctor accompanied the rescuers into the blazing pit.
