(From Oob Own Correspondent.) QUEENSTOWN, February 26. THE WEATHER. The storm on Sunday week was followed by a spell of glorious weather, midsummer conditions prevailing. Last Sunday there was quite a change, rain falling throughout the day, though the atmosphere still continued comfortably Yesterday the sun shone out again, and a gentle breeze helped to restore normal conditions. To-day has been very pleasant. The readings at the local meteorological station for the seven days ended February 23 are.—

BUSINESS CHANGE. Our local solicitor, Mr Robert Gilkison. jun., has just Id his legal practice to Mr C. H. M'Kay, LL.B., of Morrinsville, who enters into possession on April 1 next. Mr Gilkison has taken a partnership with Mr W. P. Pringle, of Wellington, whither he will go about the middle 4p Some' seven and a-half years ago Mr Gilkison purchased the late Wesley Turton's practice, and since that time he has been closely identified with local organisations of various kinds, including tae Borough Council, the Waflatipu Golf Club, of which latter he was secretary for some time. FIRE BRIGADE. A team from the local fire brigade will motor to Oamaru on Friday to take part m the Southern Districts Fire Brigades' Sub-association demonstration at Oamaru on Saturday. The team will comprise Deputy-superintendent A. Farrant, Foreman W. H. Nelson, Firemen M. Davidson, T. Muir, and W. H. Nelson, jun. Superintendent H. J. Robins will also accompany the party to Oamaru as the Queenstown delegate to the conference. FARMING. The crops in this district are ripening fast, and it is expected there will be an abundant harvest. One prominent farmer is of opinion that the use of superphosphates when sowing his seed has contributed to the particularly forward condition of a portion of his wheat crop. GIFT EVENING. On Thursday evening Miss Louie Thompson, " Eureka House," who is shortly to be married,, was entertained by a number of young people of the town at a gift evening at "Grand View Guest House,' Miss Rene Powell being hostess. Vocal and instrumental items were rendered by several of the girls present, while games and competitions of various kinds, as well as community singing, went to make up a very enjoyable programme. GENERAL. , A day-excursion from Invercargill and intermediate (stations brought about 450 people to Queenstown on Sunday. Unfortunately the weather conditions were very inclement, which rather spoiled the outing. In the afternoon the First Battalion Band, which came from the Southland capital with the excursion, gave a fine programme of music in the Garrison Hall, which helped to fill in the time. The Public Works Department is at present making the preliminary arrangements for the building of the concrete breakwater on the foreshore of Lake Wakatipu. It is understood a start is to be made first with the stretch along to the Soldiers' Memorial gateway. Representations have been made by the local Borough Council to the department asking that the rebuilding of the existing wooden breastwork be undertaken after *??*«-, , In times of flood and a high lake this old structure had threatened to collapse, and it has had to be strengthened by wiring the main piles to nearby trees. The replacing of it with a permanent wall has been long overdue as the Borough Council has been unable to contribute ite quota of £SOO. With *the assistance of the Carnival Committee, which haß donated £2OO of this sum, the money will be available immediately after the close of the present financial year. # The interior of the court house has just been thoroughly renovated by tradesmen from the Public Works Department. Ihe other rooms in the building have also undergone a thorough overhaul. PERSONAL. ™J£Vn d H - T' LeKKO ' of Sydney, visited Queenstown during the week. Sir Thomas'Yarr was a visitor from .London tins week. Mr and Mrs J. S. Hanafin, Christchurch, have just been spending a few days here. Mr Denniston Cuthbertson was a passenger from Invercargill on Saturday Mrs Thomas Faulkner, of Heidelburg, Melbourne who is a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Charles Beeby, of Queenstown, spent Friday here looking up old friends. Mrs Faulkner has been spendin a month in Dune'din with her brother, Mr Charles Beeby. ' Mr and Mrs G. E. Evans, of Johannesburg, were among overseas visitors to Queenstown during the week. The Revs. Father Price, Methven, and father Fogarty, Darfield, spent a few days here this week. The Rev. Father Finnerty, who has been working in the mission field in China, was "iionc: visitors to Queenstown.
