(From Our Own Correspondent.) i ' MILTON, February 27. ‘rLAWN TENNIS. In the South Otago Association's B grade competition on Saturday afternoon Toko will receive a visit from the Kaitangata team; Clinton will play Clutha at Baiclutha. Milton team: Small, Coombe, Miller, ■ Gray, Misses Dowdall, Clery, S. Vidal, G. Vidal. The” I Milton Club’s C grade team, comprising Grealish, Webster, Hunt, Cannon, Misses Thomson, Corston, Wilson and Stewart will visit Milburn, on Saturday afternoon to play a friendly match. ' * BOWLING. Eight rinks from the South Otago Association’s affiliated clubs will visit Dunedin on Saturday morning to take part in the annual match against the Dunedin Centre, to be played on the Otago Club’s green. Mr J. G.' Henderson (Stirling) will act as manager of the visiting team. A rink from the Milton Club comprising G. Clark, H. A. M'Callum, P. Farrell and P.- Devanney will visit Kaitangata this evening to play a challenge match for the “ Gold ” Cup against the holders—a rink skipped by J. Pryde., FIRE AT LOVELL’S FLAT. The residence, of Mr Alexander Smith, of “ Remote ” farm, Lovell’s Flat, was totally destroyed by fire some time last Thursday. The origin of the outbreak is unknown, and in the isolated position of the property the fire was not noticed by anyone. Mr Smith left for Milton after an early breakfast, and on returning later in the day discovered the house and contents in ruins. The loss is partly covered by insurance. TERRITORIAL TRAINING. Milton and district territorials will resume training on Saturday with a halfday parade at;the rifle range. This is the first parade since the week’s encampment on the Gore racecourse early in January. PERSONAL. Mr A. D. Aitken, of Baiclutha, has been appointed manager of Mr D, M. Henderson’s pharmacy at Milton, in succession to Mr G. M. Collins, the latter having been appointed manager of the Waimate U.F.S. dispensary Mr John Morton, a porter at the Milton railway station, has been transferred to Port Chalmers on promotion. He was accorded a farewell by fellow-workers, and presented with a serviceable suit-case, accompanied with best wishes for his future welfare. Deputy-superintendent John R. Wilson left by this morning’s express en route for Whangarei to attend the United Fire Brigades' Association’s annual conference as delegate from the Milton Fire Brigade. On v Tuesday evening the services of Mr G. M. Collins, in acting as drill instructor to the Milton Municipal Brass Band, in training members in the military drill for the recent C Grade contest, were recognised by band members, who presented Mr Collins with a set of m’’ l ary brushes, and extended best wishes r Ins future welfare on his impending departure for Waimate. FIRE BRIGADE. A team or six members of the local Fire Brigade leaves by motor to-morrow evening for Oamaru to compete in the Southern Districts Fire Brigades’ demonstration on Saturday. Superintendent W. H. Wells accompanied the team, as managar and delegate to the annual conference. BRUCE COUNTY WORKS. Tenders for six contracts for various works have been received this week and dealt * with by sub-committees of Bruce County Council, as follows; —Twenty-six chains of gravelling. Round Hill to Ridley’s (four tenders), J. I. Miller’s accepted at os 6d per yard; 20 chains metalling, Hillend to Mount Stuart railway station (two tenders). Haggitt and Gray’s accepted at £4 11s per chain, and Iss each f6r culverts; 20 chains metalling, Waihola to Taieri Mouth road (two tenders). J. L. Hughes’s accepted at 4a 9d per chain: formation and metalling on 'Milton to Akatore Coast road (three tenders), C. Marshall’s accepted at £55: ly chains earthwork on Clarendon to Berwick road (three tenders), D. Murphy’s accepted at £9O 10s; 20 chains of formation and culverts on hill on Coast road to Taieri Mouth (four tenders). C. Marshall’s accepted at £BS; carting 80 yards of metal from borough quarry at Fairfax on to Table Hill road (two tenders), J L. Hughes s accepted at 4 S lid per yard. CRICKET. ■ The following fixtures are set down for Saturday afternoon in the South Otago Association’s silver cup competition, in which Clutha B is leading by two points from Milburn:—Clutha Valley v. Waiwera, at Waiwera; Milburn v. Clinton; Milburn v. Ownka; Clutha A v. Clutha Milburn team:—Collings, Allan Wisely Anicieh <2), Kane (2), Bowie (2D M Grouta, Stvaitf. Advice was received this - morning by the South Otago Cricket Association that the proposed visit of a Southland team to Baiclutha on Saturday to play a match against South Otago has been cancelled owing to inability to raise a team. WATER SUPPLY. Since the disastrous collapse of Milton’s water tower during a storm on Sunday afternoon, April 5. 1925, borough residents—particularly in the higher levels —have • been greatly inconvenienced through lack of water supply immediately the electric motor pumping plant was discontinued each evening Grave risk was also encountered in the event of an outbreak of fire at night, through delay in obtaining pressure in the water mains These defects have now been remedied by the installation of a smaller electric motor and pump to provide continuous pumning service during the night hours. Burst water mains are providing a continual source of trouble and expense to the Borough Council. Two more bursts occurred this week.
