THE MARKET FOR FISH.

TO THE EDITOR. Sn? > —Neither, fishmongers nor fishermen can be accused of making excess profits out of the public. If it ■were not so it would not take long before the position balanced itself. In other words, more shops would spring up, and more boats would go out, and thus the supply to the public would very soon come up to the demand, and perhaps a little over it, bringing prices back to normal. For these last seven months fish has been exceptionally scarce, fishermen and fishmongers suffering alike, As much as 95s lid has been paid for 841 b of groper this season. The case was knocked down at 90s; plus 2s cartage to station, 2s lid railage, and Is cartage at this end, bringing the total to £4 16a lid. The weight was 1301 b, leas 221 b trimming and 141 b on the turning of the scales- The net weight, therefore, was 841 b. I can produce the receipt for-this case. When a glut comes on the market it is during warm weather, when people dodge cooking of any kind; they do not want fish or meat,' people will not buy; result, small turnover, small returns. No matter how cheap a thing is, it is very costly if one cannot sell it. Many a buyer, tempted by the offer of ridiculously cheap fish; woke up ,to find it was the dearest price he ever paid. The demand and the supply will always give a thing its market price. Therefore the public can rest assured it will always get a fair deal. —I am, etc., C. H. C. Milton, February 26.
