The Premiers’ Conference decided to cancel as from June next the Federal grant in aid of roads in favour of a new arrangement under which the Commonwealth will distribute amongst the States the equivalent of 2id per gallon derived from the petrol" tax. The £2,000,000 accruing thus to the States must be used fti the construction and maintenance of roads. A suggestion that the petrol duties should be increased was-held over, the Federal representative pointing out certain difficulties in the .way.
