RIFLE SHOOTING.

NATIONAL k ASSOCIATION MEETING. (Peb United Press Association.) ■' WELLINGTON, February 23. Arrangements are well in hand for the annual meeting of the National Rifle Association, which will open at Trentham on Thursday morning next. A large number of entries have already come to hand, and present indications are that there will be a large number of. young shots taking part, many of' whom had never previously competed at Trentham. A sprinkling of the old hands who have been making Trentham their Mecca for years Past will also be again in evidence. Previous belt winners who will be present are Colonel E. R. Smith (1894), Rifleman R. J. King (1903 and 1909), Lieutenant W. Duncan (1909), Rifleman D. Roots (1011, 1922, and 1927) Rifleman P H. James (1913), Captain W N. Masefield (1914 and 1929), Rifleman H. V. Croxton (1920), Captain H. Simmonds (1924), and Rifleman A. Caldwell (1926). Among the “old diehards” who intend to be present might be mentioned Rifleman Frazer, of Kaitangata, who has been a regular competitor at Trentham for nearly 40 years past; Rifleman H. L. Humphries, of Hastings; Rifleman J. of Kaiapol; Rifleman F. Nelson, of Christchurch; Rifleman W. T. Pacer of Invercargill; Lieutenant J. F. Atkinson, of Auckland; and Captain A, Neilson, of Napier, who is the present North island champion. A new departure has been made this year in the, early stages of the programme. In previous years the bull’s eye shooting had commenced with the opening match seven shots at 300, 500, and 600 yards, but this year, after the service matches have been disposed of, a series of matches to .,, be , kl l ow ® aE L, tlie Imperial Agregate will be fired. The Imperial Aggregate does not count for the belt., These matches win provide an excellent, preliminary for the bulls eye series which follow.
