By Sentinel. Night Lad never looked a likely winter in the Anniversary Handicap at Wellington on Saturday, and will find it hard to do better at the meeting unless a strong horseman is on top. , Leader was prominent in the early part of the Telegraph Handicap, blit be was beaten a long way from home .With another race or two he will be greatly improved. Head Serang won the Apprentices' Plate like a good horse. He was never far from the leaders, and he finished on strongly. He will be worth following even _ in open company. Winsome Hind was having her first race when she contested the Fitzherbert Handicap. She went very fast and was one of the leaders for half a mile. She was going well at that stage, but when her rider hit her she seemed to stop and buck, after which she dropped out quickly. She should soon be a winner. Hard Words, from Mr J. T. Jamieson’s Auckland stable, was backed as a. certainty in the Fitzherbert Handicap. She f>wed great speed, but so did Winsome nd, who kept the Auckland youngster busy that he had no reserve when he was required to tackle fresh opposition over the last 100 yards. Hard Words is by Diacquenod from the imported mare Mazabuka. His turn will come soon. . Master Clarence gave further evidence 1? the Trentham High-weight Handicap that he is a much-improved gelding. He was not in the picture in the early stages, but he was handy when the straight was reached, and over the last two furlongs he always looked certain to be in the money. He finished "bn resolutely, and won handsomely. _ It looked ‘as if a longer journey would suit him, and he may run a. good mile and a-quarter later in the meeting. He will win some more money in open company before the end of the season. stated that Mr T. H. Lowry is likely to pack up his racing colours for a while and to dispose of most of his horses in training (says the Press). Mr Lowry contemplates an extensive trip l -to the Old Country, Hia trainer, F. Davis, when questioned at Trentham on Saturday, said he had not yet arrived at a decision 88 future movements, but would probably have a team to control as soon as be completed his engagement with Mr Lowry. Rational II was responsible for a fine performance in winning the Douro Cup, 116 was one of the leaders all the way> and he finished on very gamely under pressure. He is an Australian-bred four-year-old by Rossendale. . Already ne has worn several races, but he looks as if he would improve a lot, and next season he should be capable of playing his part well in important open events over Tong journeys. ; .Sjfcterline, who won the Trial Plate, is a- novice. from Sir George Clifford's v a m. ? e ia a well-grown three-year-old hy the Ace from Sailor’s Hope, the dam of Quarterdeck. This was his first race, and he put up an exceptionally good per- , formance. He was one of the last to leave the mark; but he ran round the held on the outside at the home turn, and won decisively. He looks as if he would stay, and he should soon get some more money. was backed in the Trial Plate as if defeat was out of the question. He jumped out slowly, and still, was a long way back at the entrance. From there he put in a good run, but he had no chance _of overhauling Waterline, though he beat all the others. Jnloux is piling np, an unenviable list of placed performances, out he should brea& the spell.very *oon, % . - Gay Crest, a member of F. D. Jones's team, ran his best race when he filled third place in the-Trial Plate. He stuck ) to his task gamely, and he looks a 1 good J •ort to. follow now. I Dancing Star, an Australian-bred mare, a fine burst of speed in the Trial ■.Plate, and she looks certain to pay her way later in the season. ■' G/eat Charter registered an attractive performance when he won the January Handicap. He was always handy to the and he stayed out the mile in impressive style. He is a five-year-old * £*“B. John from En Parole, and sister ~ Bobrikoff, but he has done comparatively little racing, _ A southern buyer was after Head at Trentham on Monday, but the guineas, put a stop to nego- _ Green Linnet’s win in the- Nursery Handicap showed her up aa a brilliant two-year-old, with more than the average share of stamina. She is inclined to be fractious at the barrier, but on this occasion she jumped out well, and she had Hie race, in safe keeping a furlong from home. Her sire, Tonbridge, is bred on Staying lines, while her dam. Lady Egletme, by Paper Money from Songbird’s imported darn, introduces plenty of speed Green Linnet will do still better. Nominations for the Australasian Championship will be received up to 5 p.m. on Monday next. For the convenience of New Zealand owners entries may be made with the secretary of the New Zealand Trotting Association, Christchurch. R. Townley has a useful pacer in Jessie Huon, who should not be long before winrace- lu the Levels Handicap at the Timaru Club’s meeting she finished fourth after racing well for nearly a mile and a-qnarter. She looks capable of a good deal of improvement. . The Australian-bred pacer Jupiter, who Lr.is trained by H. Aker at New Brighton, was showing some improvement in his recent £ aces - but in the Levels Handicap at the Timaru Club’s meeting he fell r.nd appeared to be sore when returning to the paddock afterwards. Provided he has not suffered any serious injury, he should pick up a stake in the near future, especially over a short course. So far W. J. Tomkinson has not made much improvement in Logan Brae. The brother to Logan Park is built on totally different -lines from his briliant relative, and his training work does not indicate in the meantime that he is likely to reach a very high standard on the race track. Silverwood, who is a three-year-old pacer by Nelson Bingen from a mare by .. the trotter Woodchild, was bred by Mr T. Lowe, who owns her. Her owner most of his time to trotters, and Silverwood is in R. B. Berry’s stable, She put up quite a creditable performance in the Improvers’ Handicap at Timaru recently in finishing third to Pink Sugar and Le Thorpe after racing prominently throughout the race. Silverwood should benefit by the racing, and is engaged at Wellington at the end of th'> week. ■ -Despite the recent rains Forbury Park track nas seldom looked better, and with the approach of the summer meeting, it is being freely availed of. From now on the training work will gather interest tvary Jay. Talaro has not raced too well in his races this season, and the Great Audubon pacer seems to have lost form. He may show improvement when the tracks are not so hard.

John Mauritius is going well in his work, and m his latest efforts in races he nas shown some of his old form. He should not he long before being returned a winner. , Avalanche is still being kept in work, but the trotter is not improving, and he will be very lucky if he wins another race now that he is opposed to so manv young and improving trotters. The trotter Dipnoi is reported to be trotting a good deal steadier in his work than formerly, and will be taken to race at Wellington next Saturday. The trotter Bingen Starr in the early part of the season showed a lot of speed in his races, but did not race steadily. In his latest efforts, however, he has kept much better to his gait, but in the meantime seems to have lost a good deal of his speed Bingen Starr Ts in R. B. Berry’s stable. WELLINGTON RACING CLUB. T TO-DAY’S EVENTS. (From Ocb Special Reporter.) _ WELLINGTON, January 21. Excellent acceptances have been received for the concluding day of the Wellington Cup meeting. The fields, with the handicapper’s balancing of the previous form at this meeting, make the various events look rather open, and the heavy ram which set in this afternoon is sure to create heavy going, which tends to upset ideas based on firm track racmg. Mervette acts well in soft ground, and she may start favourite for the Summer Handicap, and two light-weights that may be sjipported are Royal Saxon and Amor . ■‘■he Consolation Handicap comes next in value, and two that may be supported ara Glare and Latin Quarter. BLOODSTOCK SALES. i SOME EXCELLENT PRICES. (Special to Daily Times.) WELLINGTON, January 21. The annual bloodstock sales were held at Trentham to-day, and attracted a large attendance. The weather was fine but dull during the morning, but the afternoon session was considerably affected by heavy showers, which drove the people away from the ringside to the shelter Provided by the veranda fronting the stables. The bad weather was no doubt greatly against the interest of the vendors, and the firms interested should consider the advisability of erecting a stadium, where the sales could be conducted without the weather affecting the selling prices. Top price at the sale was made by the Hunting. Song—Oratress colt, which made 2400 guineas, and went to the owner of Concentrate, which horse ranks as a halfbroasr to the youngster. The brother to Phar Lap made 1500 guineas, and, as he looks a more robust youngster and shows more size than the latter, he could not be considered dear at the price.
