FIRES.
OUTBREAK IN WHANGAKEL (Peb United Press Association.) WHANGAREI, January 4. A fire in the upper floor of Wallace’s Buildings, in Cameron street, Whangorei, at 1.30 this morning caused damage to the extent of £IOOO. One office was gutted, and several other offices, including the Ritz Restaurant, on the same floor suffered through smoke and water, while on the ground floor the stock of Wallace’s grocery and Crosby’s millinery shop were extensively damaged by water. LOCAL CALLS. An automatic false alarm was responsible for the City Fire Brigade turning out at 12.30 p.m. on Saturday to the Corporation Tramsheds in Market street. Another call was received at 9.5 p.m. on Saturday night to a bakehouse in Law street, off Cargill road, occupied by Mr Wootton and owned by Mr J. Knox. Some coats hanging before a fire had become alight, but no damage was done.
