BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS.
(From Oub Own Correspohdebt.) BALCLUTHA, December 19.. BALCLUTHA BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Balclutha Borough CounciMast night was attended by the mayor (Mr S. V. White) and Crs Hunter, Watt, Wright, Naish,, Gormack, Sinclair, Kean, and M'Lintock.
CORRESPONDENCE
B. Landels, secretary-of the Balclutha branch of the - Plunket Society, wrote asking for a donation,, as jhe branch’s financial position at present was not strong.— It was decided to grant £lO.
P. Audrey,' district railway engineer, Invercargill, wrote with regard to the flood locks on railway property at Balclutha, to the effect that under an. agreement the council was responsible for the control and operation of the flood gates, and the department.. was not responsible for these gates being ineffective. —Cr Hunter maintained' that water coming during last flood from a trap belonging to the Railways Department had caused the inflow of water. —It was left to Cr Watt to interview the .district railway engineer or.'the subject.
■ John Christie 'wrote relative to leasing the protective embankments for stock grazing, to thr effect that, he ' was prepared to adhere to his offer of £8 a year pro*ided the fences adjoining private property were repaired and made cattleproof. It was decided that the embankment be let only for sheep.
FINANCIAL.
The treasurer reported the total indebtedness at date to be £1521 10s lOd, made up of debtor balance .in district fund account £721 10s lOd, plus deposits at call £Boo.—The report. was adopted and accounts amounting to £lB4 14s 2d passed for payment. GENEEAL. The offer of J. M'Grath and Co., Dunedin, for the supply of dog collars at £2 10s per 100 was accepted. The dog tax was fixed at 10s and 2s Od as previously.
It was left to the town clerk to arrange with the daymen as to the holidays; also that the clerk get the statutory holidays and a fortnight in addition, but because of the inconvenience which this extended closing would cause to the public it was left to the clerk to devise a means of keeping the office open for part of the time.
The Deserves Committee was deputed to deal with the matter of cutting the gorse on the lower reserve and on the embankment, as no tenders had been received.
