NORTH-EAST HARBOUR NOTES

BEACH ROAD IMPROVEMENTS. The work on the Beach road was advanced considerably during the week. The bitumen surface has now been laid as far as the Cove hill, but at the present rate of progress there appears to be little chance that the hopes of residents on the harbour side that the work will bo finished by the end of the year will be ■ realised. A few weeks will elapse before a junction is made with the bitumen surface laid down last year. Noticeable improvements are being made at Company Bay, where the road is being widened and numerous bad bends removed. The sea wall has been extended and repaired. PENINSULA SHOW. The Peninsula summer show will be held, at Portobello to-day, and a largo attendance is expected. The entries are very satisfactory in most of the classes, while in some cases they show an increase over those of previous years. NORTH-EAST HARBOUR SCHOOL. The monthly meeting of the North-East Harbour School Committee was held on December 9. Arrangements were made for the break-up function to be held next Thursday evening, when a first-class and original programme will be submitted by the under the supervision of the headmaster and his assistants. Arrangements are being made for the schools of the Peninsula Comity to hold a combined picnic in February, the date and place to be arranged later. The school jubilee r ? UD1 j n committee has now increased attendances at the meetings, and arrange* ments are well in hand for all the functions to be held in connection with the jubilee. Some three or four ordained expupils will be asked to conduct the Sunday service. Replies are still being received from ex-pupils throughout the iNortn and South Islands. A number of these intend to be present. The school year is drawing to a close, ierm examinations are over, and the children are looking forward to the holidays. It has been the custom to solicit contributions in aid of the prize funds, i? ear - has been decided to raise slightly the price of admission to the concert instead of collecting. MACANDREW BAY REGATTA. The Macandrew Bay Regatta Committee is making every preparation for the regatta to be held on Boxing Day. The committee is determined to make the fixture a pronounced success. The entries are quite up to expectations, and the committee has arrangements well in hand. Sailing, rowing, and speed boats are out in the Bay .on every , available opportunity It is pleasing to note the increased interest being taken in the regatta by the residents of tbe district. MOTOR VAN ACCIDENT. When. returning to Macandrew Bay last Saturday morning, Mr W. motor delivery van left the road and fell on to the beach. The driver was fortunate in not being pinned in his seat under the water. The tide was at the flood at the time, otherwise the accident would probably have been serious. There is a tall of fully 10 feet to the- beach where the mishap occurred. The van was damaged to such an extent that it had to be thoroughly overhauled. BICYCLE ACCIDENT. A serious accident was narrowly averted recently, when a boy named -Roy ilook, who was riding a bicycle down Marion street, collided with a motor car. ihis is the most dangerous corner in the township The boy is about again, but the bicycle is beyond repair. GIRL GUIDES AND SEA SCOUTS. The Macandrew Bay Girl Guides, Cornwall Cubs, and Sanders Sea Scouts, under their various officers, will parade at the Governor-General s inspection this afternoon. SOCIAL EVENING. The second social gathering held by the ladies of the district took place in the Public Hall last Wednesday evening, when theie was a large attendance of residents and visitors.
