ALLEGED THEFT.
GOVERNMENT SERVANT CHARGED. SUPPRESSION OF NAME REFUSED. (Peb United Press Association.) , AUCKLAND, December 13.. Arrested yesterday, Richard James Lahigan, aged 26,' a_ clerk in the 1 Government service, residing at Ponsonby, appeared at the Police Court to-day. Lanigan was charged that, in April, 1926, andon divers dates to November 9, 1926,. he stole sums totalling £3 10s, the property of the New Zealand Government. Chief Detective Hammond obtained a remand until December 19. Counsel asked for bail, and also requested that .the ; accused’s name should be suppressed until the case came on for' hearing. The magistrate (Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M.) granted bail in the sum of £IOO, with two sureties of £IOO each. Referring to the queetion of suppression, he said:—“l am not going to make a regular practice-of suppresisng names. Others who are employed in the Government service will only be suspected if I suppress Lanigan’s name.” Counsel: Nothing has been proved yet. The case hae not been heard. “Never mind,” said the magistrate, “if he is acquitted it will be all right for him. I will not make any order.”
