ALPINE SCENERY

ADDRESS BY MR ERIC MILLER. A lecture, interspersed with musical Items, was given by Mr Eric Miller, well known as an alpine climber, in the Hanover Street Baptist Hall last evening before a fairly large audience. Tho subject of the lecture was “ Glorious Mountain Scenery of New Zealand,” and the lecture was illustrated by a number of films and lantern slides, these being shown by Mr Roland Ellis. Tho original photographs had boon taken by Mr H. \V. Boddy. Mrs W. H. Hictt said that they were very much indebted to Mr Miller and Mr Ellis for giving them tho entertainment. They had been told that these gentlemen had some excellent views of Otago scenery, and when asked if they would give an evening they had kindly consented to do so, and the promoters of the entertainment were very grateful to them. It was understood that the photographs were very fine and all were very fortunate in having an opportunity of seeing them. Mr Miller, in a few introductory remarks, mentioned that there were 130 pictures to bo shown, including views Of Mount Aspiring, the Matakitnki Valley, the head of the Arawata, the head of the. Dart, and many places in the mountainous regions contiguous to those. Certain sections of the lecture dealt with the country up the Wilkin River, which flowedrdnto Lake Wanaka. The photographs wore the result of five or six trips. The pictures screened wore exceedingly interesting and gave an excellent idea of the rugged grandeur of the localities visited. The photography was very good, the definition of every picture being especially fine. Tho stationary pictures wore shown first, and later came some interesting moving views of a panoramic character. At intervals songs were contributed by Mesdamcs da Silva, Macartney, G. Scott and Mr H, P. Desmoulins. The accompaniments wore played by Mrs Desmoulins.
