Arrow Lad registered a good performance in the Jockey Club Handicap, He appeared to have the race in safe keepms .vhen he shot to the front at the entrance to the straight, and though he was unable to stall pit the challenge of Full Feather, he easily beat the rest of the field. Having demonstrated his ability to run out a mile in good company, he should soon be a winner again. Make Up was backed to a very short price in the Ashley Handicap, and he was responsible for a good performance. He and the winner, The Bailiff, kept close company all the way, and the Blenheim four-year-old was only beaten on the post by the narrowest of margins. He is bred to stay, and he may make amends before the season is much further advanced.

The Bailiff atoned for many disappointments when he won the Ashley Handicap. He had been backed very confidently on several occasions without success, but on this occasion he was always in the picture, and be stayed the mile out very resolutely. Having shown that he poseeses stamina he may be worth keeping in mind for other events later on over a distance, as these, rather than sprints, may see him to most advantage. Caterpillar created a surprise by her success in the Avon Handicap. Her brilliancy has never been in dispute, but those who had followed her career doubted her ability to run out seven furlongs, , Her great speed enabled her *o get a big break on the field, and though ehe was stopping at the end. she Stayed on long enough to win by a good margin. This was easily her best performance this season, and now that she has-struck form she may go on to further successes. Keddar was always well placed in the Avon Handicap, and be finished up with a strong, run over the last two furlongs. He is a verv useful customer, who should be worth following for early engagements.

The South Canterbury three-year-old. Night Lad, began slowly in the Avon Handicap, but he put in a brilliant run when the straight was reached that landed him in third place. The first time he leaves the mark smartly he will be hard to beat. , Gold Tinge was one of the leaders in the Avon Handicap until the home turn vraa reached, when he stopped' vjary quickly. Some months ago Wilma Dillon went into Tomkinson’s stable, and he fcas been showing such good form in his training work that an early success was expected. He has not done much racing over a journey, and he can be expected to improve after some more experience. Tom Thumb has been out of racing for some time, arid has not been long in work. In the Hagley Handicap, nowever, he was well backed, and he justified the support accorded him by making n riuick beginning and leading throughou ” hen at h's best he is more than useful over any distance. Lindbergh has raced well this season, and has been looked upon as likely to show considerable improvement. He was well supported in the chief event at Oamaru on Labour Day, but be did not race well. He was not prominent in the early stages of the Victoria Handicap on the opening day at Addington, but over the last half mile he put in good work, and eventually beat the favourite .rather easily. Lindbergh is in C. S. Donald s stable, and that trainer wa* confident that the Author Dillon pacer would show better form than at Oamaru, He is a lightly fleshed pacer, who can stay two miles, and he can be expected to be m the best class in the near future, ilo did not nave too good a passage in will rac *‘ f hf came into the straight well out from the roils, but his stamina stood to him nt the finish. Western Voyage, who won the Dommon Handicap, came from Australia some time ago, and went into Tomkinpons stable. After being raced for some time, and showing indifferent form, he Was turned out for a long spell.' TomItinson did not get on well with him and when he resumed work he put Western Voyage into C. Tasker’s stable. That trainer got uim going in greatlv improved form, and he then went back into fomkmsons charge. Since then he has Kept op improving. He is a particularly good stayer, and when he settles down to trot he can go very fast. During the last few months Western Voyage has shown a great deal more improvement, and hm victory was freely anticipated work 036 W 10 ba( * tie training Tamerlane Is trained at New Brighton and for a long time he was very unsound. His performance in the Dominion Handicap was a good one, as he is not regardet as a proved stayer.
