OTAGO YACHT ASSOCIATION

MEETING OF DELEGATES. A meeting of the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association was held last evening. The president (Mr J. T. Paul) was in the chair, and the following club delegates were present Messrs W, O. Martin, T. Brookes, W. G. Hewitt, W. Sell, T. Anderson, F. Boswell, G. F. Bewley, F. T. Partell, W, Davis, J. H. Kewislj, C. Anthony, and F. Goodwin. INTERPROVINCIAL YACHT CONTESTS. The secretary of the Port Chalmers Yacht and Motor Boat Club wrote stating that the club wag not in a position to subscribe any additional sum towards the Sanders Cup expense fund. It was suggested that the association should hold an art union to assist the fund. The Vauxhall Power Boat and Sailing Club advised that the club intended to do everything in its power to subscribe to the Sanders'and Cornwell Cups contest funds. i

Mr Paul said the interprovincial contests should be supported by the clubs. If the clubs did not support the contests, then these must eventually go bv the board. He was of the.opinion that neither the clubs nor the association could continue to bear the cost of the two contests. He knew that the clubs had had difficulty in collecting money in the past, and he did not wish to burden them atiy further.

Mr Bewley contended that the people of the province whicli was fortunate enough to win a contest should have an opportunity to find a portion of the required money to bear the cost of the next contest.

Mr Boswell said" he did not think the Ravensbourne Club would be in a position to contribute its usual amount this year.

The suggestion made by the Port Chalmers Club in regard to promoting an art union did not meet with the approval of the delegates. Mr Paul said the association had never insisted that each club contribute a fixed amount, and the association could get over the difficulty only by asking all the clubs, as in former years, to contribute ns large a sum'as possible.

In referring to a tetter received from the Otago Harbour Board, in which it was stated that the board co,nld not contribute any sum towards the Sanders Cup contest, Mr Paul said it did not seem feasible for the boam to- supplement the funds of local regattas, but be thought the board should. make a contribution to an interprovincinl contest fund. 1

It was decided to write to the Harbour Board and the Port Chalmers Club pointing out that the Sanders Cup contest was an interprovincial contest, and to ask both bodies to give the' matter every consideration.

After some further discussion it was decided to leave the matter to each individual club for consideration. TRIAL RACES.

There was some discussion on the question of commencing the Sanders and Cornwell Cups trial races next Saturday. Several delegates contended that the trials should be postponed for one week in view of the fact that two clubs intended to hold the opening functions on Saturday.

Air Paul said it would be unwise to postpone the trials, as if bad yea tier was experienced, the trials would drag on to a very late period. Mr Bewley said he was strongly in favour of postponing the Cornwell Cup trials for one week in the interest of the two clubs whicli will hold opening functions on Saturday. He moved a motion to this effect. * { Paul again said it was very unwise to postpone the trials, as 'there were too many risks attached to such a proposal, especially ns regards broken weather. Mr Bow ley’s motion was defeated and the Sanders and Cornwell Cups trials will comincnee on Saturday afternoon, as previously arranged by‘the'association. general. The Broad Bay Boating C'lull was granted permission to hold tile race for the outboard motor boat championship of Otago in conjunction with its regatta to be held on January 1. The Ruvcnsboimie Club advised that it was quite agreeable to allow members of oilier clubs to compete in its races providing all the dubs fell into line.— Mr Paul said , the domestic affairs of the clubs should be dealt with by the einlis. If the association interfered with the- inner workings of clubs, then trouble would quickly arise. The Otarni saeht Club's rules did not permit of its races being open to members of other clubs, and it could not fall into line.— I lii! chairman .said the associat ion could not do anything further in the matter, and as the delegates expressed the same opinion, no action was taken.

Conditions governing the. C. O. Wakefield Cup were submitted by the committee appointed for that purpose. The principal clauses state that the cup can bo competed for at each regatta, the races to be confined to tpeed boats of lo miles and over, and the trophy to be awarded on the points system. The boats competing for the cup must carry a crew of not fewer than two, who must be oter 18 years of age.—After some discussion on the question of small outboard motor boats being allowed to compete, it was decided to defer further consideration of the committee’s report until the. next meeting of the association. Tim secretary of tb> Burfics-St. Leonards Aquatic Club advised that it had been decided to hold the annual regatta on. February I.—The date was approved.

The secretary of the Ravensbourne Regatta Committee advised that the annual icgatta would be held on-February 1 5. The date was approved. The Port Chalmers Club advised that nil its races to be hold during tie season would bn open to members of other clubs. The offer by the association to the chib to control the annual race for the Oliphant Cup bad been accepted. The date foi bolding the race would fie fixed later in tbo season.

It was decided to ask the Port Chalmers Club to state a case in regard to a protest entered by the owner of the launch Muritai, which was placed second in a race held at the last Portobello regatta, and that the Regatta Committee also be requested to supply a report on the race lo the association.— The chairman said this was the best method to adopt, as the association was not clear on the matter.

It was decided to allot the official number 51 to the outboard motor boat Musketeer.
