V, Dr Eardley Fenwick, of Wellington, arrived in Dunedin by. the express last nighti ' Dr E. H. Williams and Dr Gerald Fitzgerald returned to Dunedin yesterday from the Medical Congress at Sydney. At the meeting of the council of the Otago Institute on Tuesday evening, Mr Hugh Dawson, of Adelaide, was elected a life member of the institute. Mr Dawson, who is a visitor to New Zealand, is also a member of the New Zealand Astronomical Society -(lncorp.) and of the South Australian Astronomical Society and other scientific bodies in Australia. Captain Ji S. 6. Fraser; D. 5.0.. chief staff officer and second naval member of the New Zealand Naval Board, will arrive by the first express to;day on a visit of inspection to the divisional headquarters of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. He will stay at the Otago Club. Mr W. A. Eades, who for 38 years has been manager of the Melbourne .branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., will retire on November 30. He will be isucceeded by Mr R. v, S. MTherson, sub-manager in Melbourne of the National. Bank of Australasia, Ltd., who is- resigning from the service of the bank to take up the appointment'.

: The Mayor (Mr R. S. Black) stated at the meeting of the City Council last night that Commodore Blake had notified him that H.M.S, Dunedin would pay a visit,to Dunedin -on October 10. and-remain till October 'l6. It was decided to ask the Civic Committee to make suitable arrangements to welcome the visitors. Advice has been received that Miss Catherine ; Landreth, graduate of ; the Otago University Home , Science School, and a holder of the BA. degree of lowa College, has resigned her position as research specialist m nutrition in the State College of Washington in . order to accept a Schelmari Rockefeller Foundation Scholarship. The scholarship entitles her to travel and study in the United States, at the Merrill Palmer School m Detroit, and at the University of Columbia,. New York. Miss Landreth is making a special study of nursery schools and' the physical growth and development of young children. - : -.
