FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.

MANCHESTER UNITY. f , Tlie fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Valley Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., was held in the lodgeroom, Albany street,-on Monday evening. The N.G., Bro. R. Bussell, presided over a good attendance of offices and brethren. The business papers for the forthcoming half-yearly district meeting were distributed and the remits discussed, the following delegates being appointed to represent the lodge:—P.P.G.M. Bro. J. Kobson, V.G. Bro. E. A. Shepard, and E.S. Bro. G, MacDonald. After business matters had been .dealt with the social side of . the meeting was provided by the P.G.M. (Bro. P. Young), and tools the form of a progressive euchre evening. A number of visiting brethren responded to the visitors’ toast, and one proposition for membership was received. A degree meeting was set down • for next lodge night. During the' - evening sympathetic relerenco was made to the passing of P.Gi Bro. G. T. Scoones, who was well known and respected throughout the Order, and it was decided to forward letters of spmpathy to the relatives of the late brother and also to the Loyal Dunedin Lodge, of which he was a prominent member. The Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge met on Tuesday evening in the M.U. Hall, Stuart street, when N.G. Bro. H.' Pithie presided oyer a large attendance of members. Visiting brethren from the Loyal Centenary, Caversham, Albion, and Dunedin Lodges were welcomed. One new member was initiated, and correspondence and ordinary business dealt with. The election of nine delegates to represent the lodge at the district - meeting at Pembroke on the 28th resulted as follows: N.G. Bro. H. Pithie. V.G. Bro. S. N. Cotton, E.S. W. H. Liddicoat, P.P.G.'M.’s Hamel, Rosevear, Flemings P.G.’s A. Poyntz, Liddicoat, and Past V.G. Bro. A. Jenkins. The remit on the order paper relating to the district chambers was the subject of keen debate, a number of prominent brethren contributing to the discussion. The _ fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Dunedin Lodge was held in the M.U. Hall, Stuart street, on Thursday evening, when there wag a large attendance of members and visiting brethren. The lodge opened in mourning, and feeling reference was made to the death of the late P,G. Bro. G, T. Scoones, the following motion being carried, in silence:—“ That the lodge deplores the death of its senior trustee, 1 P.G. Bro, George T. Scoones, and tenders its deepest sympathy'to his widow and family in their bereavement. ' The members of the lodge wish to place ■on record their high appreciation of the self-sacrificing and valuable services rendered to the lodge and Order in general by our late brother during his long membership. As a trustee for the past 25 years he discharged the duties of his responsible office with integrity and conscientious faithfulness, and to his careful management and devotion to duty the lodge is mainly indebted for its present prosperity. Sound in judgment and wise in control, he enjoyed the confidence and ■ esteem of the brethren, and by his removal the lodge has suffered an irreparable loss.” P.G. ® ro - J- Knox, on behalf of the late brother, handed to the lodge the sash apron which belonged to the lafe P-P-G-M Bro. J. H. Chapman, and also to G.M. Bro. A. M'Dougall the sash and apron of bis late father, P.P.G.M. Bro. A. M'Dougall. Owing to the required number of delegates (six) being nominated for the‘ half-yearly meeting, the following were appointedN.G. Bro. Haugh, V.G. Bro. Cameron, E.S. Bro. Morrison, P.G.’s Bros. Crosbie. M'Dougall, and Foster, The attention of members was drawn to the next • meeting, when the lodge wjll entertain the juvenile lodges. The toast of visiting . brethren was responded to by Loyal Valley. Albion, and Hand and Heart Lodges, the ,P.G.M., °FP‘ P- Young, acknowledging the toast of tue District Executive. DRUIDISM. The regular meeting of Otago Lodge Tvas well attended by members/and visitors, A.D. Bro, J. H. Barton occupied the chair, and was well supported by his subordinate officers. The business was largely of a routine nature and did notr take up an undue amount of time. The Aren Druid and Vice Arch were appointed to represent the lodge at Royal Oak Lodge’s anniversary social. The brothels who had been appointed to attend the various juvenile lodges reported on their visits and expressed the pleasure the* had derived from seeing .the boys at their work, Bro, J. W. Dove brought several notices of motion forward .to be put on the agenda paper for next meeting of Grand Lodge, It was resolved that a photograph of the team which won the Ross-Stewart Shield competition be inserted in the yearly booklet. The A.D. competition, which took place after the conclusion of business, attracted a considerable number of entries, and after a spirited competition, P.A. Bro. Kilgour was declared the winner, with A.D. Bro. Barton second. During the evening one new member was elected and initiated into the mysteries of Druidism. PROTESTANT ALLIANCE.

The Loyal Excelsior, Lodge, No. 41, Green Island, held-its quarterly meeting on Wednesday, September 18, in the lodge room. There was a large attendance of members. The lodge was opened by the W.M., Bro. E. F, Adam.' assisted by the chaplain, Bro. H. A. Christie, an<i a frill roll of officers. An official visit was paid by the R.W.G.M., Bro. C. Arnold, and members of the grand executive, who were very cordially received hy the W.M., Bro. Adam. An abbreviated outline of the juvenile and female policies was given by the grand secretary, Bro. A. Hay. Bros, J. C. Lindsay, Watson, and Lumley reported on their' delegation to the Dispensary Board, and a vote of thanks was accorded them. Bro. J. Lindsay reported on the euchre tournament to ■be held at an early date. One nomination for memher ship was received. A vote of thanks was accorded the Grand Lodge visitors, each of whom replied briefly. The W;M., before closing the lodge, tendered his thanks to all for their attendance.
