MORNINGTON TRAMWAYS.

REQUESTS BY RATEPAYERS’ . ASSOCIATION. ✓

The Tramways Committee will report as follows to the City Council “A communication from the Mornington Ratepayers’ Association asking for information under various heads and submitting sundry suggestions relating to the Mornington tramways is laid on the table. Your committee begs to submit the following report on the subject matters of the letter, and_ recommends that the association be advised accordingly, viz.:— (a) Time of completion of Mailer street tramway.—ln view of the faH that a considerable period must necessarily elapse to enable the new roadway to settle thoroughly and consolidate, the time it not yet ripe for taking into consideration the possibility of undertaking tramway construction work.

(h) The issue of a 14-trip ticket foils on the Mnryhill line exclusively.— The commitee is not favourable to the proposal at the present time, as it -would create an anomaly with other sections of the cable services. (e) The extension of the Maryhil! lino to a more convenient point.—The suggestion would involve some exceedingly expensive work, and it is not recommended at the present juncture. (dl The use,of extra cable cars in lieu fo 'trailers to relieve the strain on the cable. —This proposal would not have the desired effect—the strain would, in fact, be increased.

(e) The provision of a 10 minutes’ service between 7 and 8 o’clock every evening on the Maryhill line.—This service is now being run. and will be continued.

(f) The provision of a new rope to be always kept in stock as a stand-by.—This proposal has been carefully considered at various times, but experience has shown that a rope kept coiled on a drum for any length of tone gives a good deal of trouble. A stock rope would need to be kept on the drum for at least 12 months.
