November -9, 11, 13, 16. —Canterbury I J.C. - I . - By Sentinel. . ! Racing at Avondale and Ashburtou today. - • DuUdi Money wilt be one of the.shortest priced favourites at Ashburton to-day. Night Lad had been paid up for in two races-. at Ashburton to-day, but the indications are that be will start in the shorter event, the Farewell Handicap. Last year Standfast suffered in his races because light boys could not get the best out of him. _ With a higher scale of weights prevailing at Ellerslie in June, lie showed his real form ; winning a division of the Jervois Handicap and finishing a close third to Lucy - Rose and Black Duke in the King George Handicap, seven furlongs. He appears nicely placed m the Henderston Handicap at Avondale to-day with 7.10, providing a suitable rider can be found at the weight. Macroom. who is in the chief sprint event at Avondale to-day, showed very little form last season, during which she won only one race.' the sprint at Matamata. The Archiestowu—Lady Gwendoline mare has been executing fair work on the tracks of late, and may do better this season if she stands up to training. Prairie King, a candidate in the first division of the Maiden Plate at Avondale to-day, is a three-year-old by King Nassau —Fjady Lilac, in R, A. Edwards’s team. Prairie King has not yet raced in public. He has shown some speed on the tracks but therb is little prospect of his running out _ seven furlongs on. anything he has shown on the tracks. Imamint, the Catmint filly who is to contest the Avondale Stakes to-day, is a sturdily built juvenile. The fact that she- has riot had as much racing as some of her opponents will be against her. Imamint ran third in a division of the Parade at Ellerslie last mouth, and promises to prove useful. Fraser, an acceptor for the second division of the Maiden Plate at Avondale to-Jay. showed some promise as a two-year-old. The Raceful —Miss Roselands gelding, who has had no racing this season,, may find the journey a shade far for him. Flying Juliet is to-have her first start of the new season in the. Flying Stakes at Avondale to-day. The Romeo—Penella •mare did most of her racing over middle distances last season. Judging by her displays, on the track during the past week, she.has lost some,of her brilliance. She can have little chance to-day against the more' seasoned candidates down to appear. Private advices received in New Zealand show that if New Zealanders supported the Dominion winners on Saturday at Randwick they must have had a royal day.’ '.Ceremony was at double figures at barrier-rise, and Nightmarcb finished up at a price which must have surprised even the- optimists, for- although not .double figures, it was within measurable distance of them. First Acre was at a longer quote than Ceremony, and not much money invested on him was necessary to win a lot. The light-weight* rider T. Webster won on First Acre, and also on another long-priced winner who was in less demand than the New Zealander. Double figures apparently were more or less "the order of the day. One of the greatest shocks received by racegoers was the failure of ’Albanian in the Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on September 7. Albanian at his previous start had finished a close second.. The run was expected to improve him. and his -admirers took short prices abou’ him at Caulfield. He did not jump away quite as smartly as at Williamstown, but with a great burst of speed he soon ran up to the leaders. Half a mile from home he. and. Samaden were almost together well dear of the others, and at the straight entrance Albanian held a slight lead. He stopped almost in a stride, and at the finish he was /only seventh. Of course J. Pike, who rode him, does, not unnecessarily punish a beaten horse, and although Albanian had no chance of gaining a place he might have finished a little closer. From a Caulfield Cup point of view the performance was most disheartening, and the only excuse which is offered Js that the state of the track did not suit him. After the race he was superseded by High Syce at the top of the Caulfield Cup quotations. The race was won by Highland from' High Syce and Gallbpade. . TROTTING. FIXTURES. October s.—Methven T.C. December 30.—Inangahua T.C. By Sentinel. Logan Fraser and Nell de Beau will carry heavy support in their engagements at Ashburton to-day. Logan Brae has improved considerably since coming to Addington (says the Christchurch Times), but it remains to be seen how . he will shape with the colours up. The brother to the brilliant Logan Park can turn on a good deal of speed in his work. Flossie Harvester, who is a half-sister by Sonoma Harvester to Tom Thumb.'is improving in her training work, and should be a useful performer this season She looks best suited to short courses. J. 'Deyell is working away with his two trotters. Nelson Ata and Nelson Prince, both of whom look bright and well. Kreisler put up a couple of good performances at Addington last week, finnish ing third in the mile harness and occupying a similar position iu the mile and a-quarter. He seems to have improved at the barrier, and now begins quite satisfactorily. He is also racing move generously than formerly. . Prince Pointer continues to go on the right way in his training. This attractive pacer is in capital heart, and lie gets through his work, which consists of steady pacing, well within his powers, as though he likes it. He should be at his best at. Cup time. A particularly promising pacer is Dilnon, one of C. S. Donald’s team. He is by Author Dillon from Nonnie, and last Season he won most impressively on two occasions. He is a fine-looking horse, and he should do well this season. Zenith continues to uphold his reputation for consistency (says the Christchurch Sun), and he has only to train on the right way for E. C. M’Dermott at Addington to win a two-mile race later on. It was unfortunate for his party on Saturday that Zenith should meet Dahpne de Oro dressed in her best regalia and with a second or two the better of the handicap. Zenith is one of the solid type, and what he lacks in brilliance is accounted for in his sameness. He was in

the picture at Addington in August, and after finishing a creditable third to Roi I’Or and Dundas Boy in the August Handicap, was unlucky enough to bump up against the vastly-improved Wilma Dillon on the final day in a 10-furlong flutter, so he is in line for the main honour.

AVONDALE SPRING MEETING ; * \ (Special to Daily Times.),- ■ AUCKLAND, September 20 Unless rain falls the track will be in wonderful order for the opening of the Avondale spring meeting to-morrow, ihere were a couple of showers this morning, and it: is again showery this evening, so that the weather is very doubtful. Splendid fields are engaged, and all the races are very open. The Maiden PJate will be run in two divisions, with dividends on the winners only. There are some unknown quantities engaged, and the prospects are difficult to assess. The Mountain Guide-Measurer bracket and Gay Duke read best of those in the first division, while Ccimestor and J) reset are the most promising in the second division. Crimestor ran second at his last start last season, and his latest gallops have been executed in pleasing fashion, , There are 17 engaged in the Kingsland Hurdles, and it is decidedly' open. Lady Spa peen. Sir Archie, and Glena Bay ire bkely to run well, and will probably be well fancied. Some useful sprinters figure in the Members Handicap. This race should furnish the three-year-olds, Leader and r lying Prince, with an excellent opportunity to show their worth, and it is anticipated that they will race prominently Tahoma, another of the same age who is on the minimum, may be one of the hardest they have to beat. So far Tahoma has only one minor success to his credit, but he is an attractive mover, and should soon extend his record. The Avondale Cup promises to provide backers with plenty of excitement. There fine field engaged, and on the eve of the race it seems more open than ever. Histone, Paddon, and Piuthair may claim most attention from backers, and they certainly look like running well. Runners will be fairly numerous in the Avondale Stakes, and the connections of a number of the candidates are hopeful of success. Some who appeal as having chancesmre Cylinder, Watch Officer, and Hard Words, and they are certain to command feolid followings. r of |P e ® d y sprinters will contest the Flying Stakes Handicap, and the wagering is likely to be spirited. Gold Money, Lady Qucx, and Silvermine are strongly fancied, and may bo the favourites.

~ Some useful hacks are engaged in the Swanson Handicap, and the best prospects may be Motcre, Sea Cob. and Leitrim.

There is a useful class in the Henderson Handicap, and it is sure to be a solid betting race. Amor, Standfast, and Maori l|oy are nicely placed, and may claim strong support. There was some sprinting on the outside of the course proper'at Avondale this morning, the trestles being out about 50 feet.

With a good deal, the worse of the weights Silvennine was just going a shade better than Knightlike at the conclusion of four furlongs in 50 ‘bSsee—a good gallop. On this gallop the improving Knightlike might have more than an outside chance with the minimum in the sprint. Another to sprint well was Lady Quex, who was going strongly to beat Oration comfortably over five furlongs in Imin 6sec. Lady Ques is a smart mare and is one who might win a sprint at any time now.

Tahoma. after losing over a length eariy, was going slightly better than White bang at the conclusion of four furlongs in 52 i-Ssec. Tahoma shapes very promisingly.

Piuthair ran seven furlongs nicely in Imin 34 3-sseo, the last sis in Imin 20sec. On a dry track this mare should make a bold showing in the Cup. Watch Officer went nicely in beating Trickle and Gay Idea over four furlongs in 52 l-ssce. Watch Officer has had the benefit, of a race, and he is likely to sliow up prominently in the Avondale Stakes.

Other sprints this morning were as follows;—lndolent, five furlongs in Imin 7 I-ssec; Norval Tea, four in 52 3-ssec; Elj'ing Juliet, five in Imin 7sec; Belle Star, four in 53 2-ssee; High Pitch beat Waltzer and Valquette over five furlongs in Imin 6 4-ssec. A. E. Ellis is expected to be here to ride Prodiec, Desert Glow, and Value. ASHBURTON RACING CLUB. (From Our Special Reporter.) ASHBURTON, September 20. A fall of snow that took place at Ashburton yesterday morning will tend to improve the going, as prior to its appearance the track was on the hard side. Only a small field will contest the Ashburton Handicap, as there is a possibility that Night Lad may be reserved for the Farewell Handicap. ' In his possible absence, the race looks like a duel between Hoylake and Chide. Hoylake’s form is decidedly superior to that of Chide, but the race may be decided on racing condition rather than on paper, and for that reason Chide will probably start favourite. Dutch Money has a big weight to carry for a three-year-old in. the Longbeaeh Handicap, but she will probably start favourite. Page Boy may be the best of the others, as Phastar is a doubtful starter Desert Song, on his form to Leader last month at Riccavton, will start favourite Plate, in which Meprisant "ml also carry strong support. The Fairfield Handicap is fairly open, and Haze Sea Raid, Topere, and Amourette will be supported. The order of favouritism may be Haze, Amourette, and bea Raid. r appearance of Pink Coat and Night Lad will arouse interest if both start in ttie _ Farewell Handicap. Caterpillar and riair may, however, be selected to keep the best of them busy.
