conference of dairy research, scientists Was opened at Massey College this, morning. The meeting’decided to form a New Zealand Science Association, and resolved itself into the first meeting of that body.- Papers on questions ’ relating to the dairy industry were read. The proceedings were not open to the press, hut reports will he supplied at the end of the conference. - A married man, aged 24, whose name was suppressed in the pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to the theft on various dates between June .1 and July 29 of the sum of £2B 10s, the property of, Coipbined Motors, Ltd. The senior detective explained that the accused. a clerk,’ had been employed by the firm for some months. Oil July 29 it was reported to the police that the firm’s premises had been broken into and the sum of £2B 10s stolen. Some doubt was felt, and further investigations resulted in the accused admitting taken the money in small sums. The accused had a wife and child, and there had been a good deal of sickness. He was remanded till Saturday to enable the probation officer ip furnish a report. Bail was allowed. \ ' ; CHRISTCHURCH, August 0. 'A general rate of approximately 3d in the £ on unimproved value was decided upon- at a meeting of the City. Council. The rate will be levied on the new valuations, and ,it is estimated to produce £147,536. -Last y6ar a general rate of 3|d was levied on the old valuations, and it was estimated to produce £125,079. -
