FOG IN SYDNEY HARBOUR. (United Press Association.) (By -Electric Telegraph—Copyright.)^ SYDNEY, August 3.. (Received August 3j at 5 p.m.) Sydney’s densest fog of the year enveloped the harbour this morning, and although there were many near collisions no mishaps have been reported. Some of the ferry services were suspended for several hours.
ROBBERS AT WORK. MASKED AND ARMED MEN. SYDNEY, August 3. There was another daring .robbery last night. . Two armed' and . masked men entered a shop at Surry Hills.; They bailed up the attendant and robbed the till. People were passing during this procedure, but, displaying great audacity, the men left the shop and disappeared in the crowd. The police later arrested two men in connection with the robery. They will be charged with robbery under arms. CRANE FALLS 150 FEET. '■ WORKERS’ TERRIBLE DEATH. , SYDNEY, August 4. (Received August 4, at 5.5 p.m.) A crane collapsed at the Temperance and General .Insurance Compiany’s new building on Saturday. Douglas Canning crashed with it 150 feet to tne Elizabeth street tram line and was killed. His body and features were mutilated beyond recognition. Hundreds of pedestrians, horrified, fled in all directions. A 'COMEDIAN’S DIFFICULTIES! SYDNEY, August 4, (Received August 4, at 5.5 p.m.) Mr Jack Cannot, the comedian, according to a letter he wrote to thej Actors’ Federation, expressed his great worry owing to financial difficulties and his inability to secure remunerative employment because of the popularity of the “talkies.” He leaves a widow and two children. BANDITS WAYLAY BOOKMAKER,. SYDNEY, August 4. (Received August 4, at 5.5 p.m.) A well-known; bookmaker, Jim Brogan, was waylaid by bandits near his home after the Warwick Farm races yesterday. Three masked men covered him with revolvers and took £7O from him, but missed nearly £SOO which he had secreted in the bottom of his car. THE FEDERAL HOUSE. RESULT OP BY-ELECTION. MELBOURNE, August 4. - (Received August 4, at 6.5 p.m.) - The by-election for Balaclava, to fill Mr Watt’s scat in the Federal House of Representatives, resulted in a victory for Mr T. W. White, the endorsed Nationalist candidate.
