LIQUOR AFTER HOURS.

A PORT CHALMERS CASE. At the Port Chalmers .Court yesterday, before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, K.M., Archibald M'Donald, licensee l of the Port Chalmers Hotel, pleaded guilty to selling liquor after hours on Saturday, July 20. Senior Sergeant Quartermain stated that Sergeant M‘Rae and Constable Paul went into the hotel at 11 p.m., and met M'Donald and two young men coming out of the bar. One of the two admitted he, had no right to bo there. • Mr W. H. Carson appeared for the defendant, said that one of the men was a hoarder, and it was really on account of his. companion, who was a friend of the licensee, that the offence was committed. It would perhaps be questioned whether or not he was a guest. This was M'Donald’s. first offence. Senior Sergeant Quartermain said the hotel was well conducted. It was doubtful whether one of the men was a boarder, but he stayed there on the Sa turclay night. His Worship said that defendant had been candid in regard to the offence, and, as there did not seem to be illicit trading carried on, the license would not be endorsed. , A fine of £5 was inflicted. Two other charges relative to the offence wore withdrawn.
