THE GAS RESTRICTION. STRINGENT ENFORCEMENT. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, August 2. Stringent gas restrictions will be enforced during the next four days. Gas can be used- for only three hours in the morning and at night. A hundisd persons are to be prosecuted for intringing the restrictions during the past fortnight. SYDNEY’S SUBURBAN RAILWAYS. ■ COST OF ELECTRIFICATION. SYDNEY, August 2. The cost of the electrification of the suburban railway system, which is nearing completion, is estimated at £14,000,000, not including the construction of the \city underground electric railway. WOMAN KNOCKED DOWN. ADELAIDE, August 2. (Received Aug. 2, at 11 p.m.) Mrs Souter, who as employed by a produce merchant, and was returning from a bank with £IOO to pay growers, was knocked down by a man, who stole the money and escaped on the footboard of a moving motor car. DEATH OF A JOCKEY. MELBOURNE, August 2. (Received Aug. 2, at 11 p.m.) At the inquest on the jockey Cairns, who was killed last Saturday, other jockeys stated that the horse ridden by Cairns took off too far away from a hurdle and crashed into it. The coroner returned a verdict of accidental death. CENTENARY OF PERTH. PREPARING FOR CELEBRATIONS. PERTH, August 2. (Received Aug. 2, at 11 p.m.) Great preparations are being made for celebrating, the centenary of Perth. The chief day will be August 12, when a pageant representing scenes at the capital site 100 years ago will be reenacted.
