, Canada has decided to take an inventory of her timber- reserves. The decision, which* owes its inspiration to the Hon. Charles Stewart, Minister of the Interior, is of importance to that country, since to an ever-increasing extent England is relying upon the Dominion for the raw material of the many commodities which are derived from timber, notably paper and artificial silk. Throughout the world the demand for timber is outstripping the supply, and the problems of conservation and replanting are becoming more and more vital. It is roughly estimated that 1,250,000 square miles of land are under limber in the Dominion, but less than half of this is merchantable, while the toll of fire is so prodigious that the figure is believed to reach from 500,000,000 to 800,000,000 cubic feet of good timber every year.
