(Received July 28, at 5.5 p.m.) France made a super-excellent start in the Davis Cup. The,weather was perfect. .

Borotra's agility was the deciding factor against Lott. , The Frenchman took the first set in next to no time, but , when Lott shed his initial nervousness he gave as good as he got. The American had the advantage in service, and also utilised a lob, ‘ adding : a cunning slice. JJorotra, however, was neyer driven from the net, where he was most effective. Lott displayed extraordinary tenacity in the second set, but ’the third was the crux of the game. Borotra began badly and lost the service, the vast crowd became exceedingly, excited. When the players were four games all the Frenchman speeded aip and completely out-manoeuvred Lott, whose backhand drives failed at critical moments.' in the final set Borotra- concentrated on an early break through and lad 2—o, i but he was beginning to tire. Lott seized the chance and aimed his service apd returns cunningly at Borotra’s feet, and thus gained the lead 4—3, but a final assault on the - aerican’s backhand, and superlative volleying .by .Borotra, won him four games in_ succession, ending a love game to win the ‘, match. . In the contest between Cochet and! Tildcn tile American, began with cannonball strokes and incredible retrieves, but Coclict returned everything - with the utmost nonchalance, the Frenchman creasing the pace in the second set, when “ Big Bill ” seemed outclassed. Whereas Cochet was faultless, Tildcn was erratic, and the result was neVerin doubt. It was all over in 50 minutes. It is not complimentary to Cochet to say that Tildeil was playing badly; he was playing well enough to reveal tha champion's armoury. Tilden was nbt missing easy halls, but when he essayed a promising stroke lie found that his opponent, with effortless ease, reduced' it * futility. Tilden's mind appeared to be an open book to Cochet. The ; American tried every variation of strategy and stroke, but he failed to shake the Frenchman's confidence and heartbreaking aceu-, racy, Allison and Lott'will meet Cochet and Borotra in the doubles.—Australian > Press Association. ,
