NEEDLEWORK FOR WINTER EVENINGS.

Partly because of the long evenings, the fancy-work counters in the shops arc specially busy. There is a great interest ,in all kinds of needlework. All manner of things in canvas are made stamped and coloured ready to be worked. Pochettes are covered in fine raffia or angora- wool-with designs ot flowers of_ conventional type. Cross-stitch is still very popular, and tablecloths and duchesse sets are made in all sizes arid designs in white and coloured linen. Morning sets are made to be worked in this way, comprising tray cloth, egg and tea cosies, and the edges are either scalloped or finished with r crochet edging of chain and double crochet in coloured silk. Small guest towels have ji border at one end to be worked. A new and good idea is tp have the design, stamped in different colours (instead or a flat blue) to indicate the diades in which it should be worked. Oval and round rugs are rr.ore popular just now than oblong ones, and the designs are largely conventional. Instead of having to work out the design from a book, or decide one's colours on a piece of stamped canvas, the rugs of to-day havethe design stamped on the canvas and coloured to show exactly where the different tints are to be used. Tapestry is more popular than ever, both in grand and petit point, or a combination of the two, and coders tor bass., screens, cliairbacks and seats., stool covers and table colours are made, as well as. cushions. The prices vary from a few shillings to three or four pounds, according to the design, and include enough wool to finish the work.
