TE ARAROA RIOT.
ACCUSED BEFORE THE COURT. SEVERE PENALTIES- IMPOSED! (Per United Press Association.) GISBORNE, April 26. . Forty-two. charges were . preferred against two Europeans and - eight Maoria at the Port Awanui Police Court on Wednesday, arising out of a riot at T# Araroa on Saturday night, when Constable Thom was assaulted, and the mob had to be quelled ■by . local residents armed with pick handles. r l ne accused were dealt : with as follows:—William Brosualian,- nine, months, with hard labourTamati Talapa, six mouths, with - hard labour; Tu Huihui, seven months, with hard labour; Graham Edmonds. eight months, with hard labour; Maka Ihaka, ; six months, with hard labour; ivomeno Poutu, three months, with hard labour; Alfred Moran, six months, with bard labour; Walene Poutu, three months, with hard labour. Hhau Karaka was fined £5 and costs (£4) ; Poki Paringatai £2 and costs (£J 10s). The majority of’ the accused were charged, with assaulting tire police, re-’ sisting the police, and common assault, and inciting to resist. The eight prisoners will be brought to the Gisborne gaol, when the flooded rivers oil the coast subside.. ,
