Speaking of the cabled statement; by the Tasmanian Minister of Lands, Sir Joseph Ward says: “ Wc have been moving for some time to establish a service of two steamers tomun regularly between the. South Island and Melbourne. We pioposc to invite -tenders, but certainnegotiations have - been going on that have not finally matured. The Government is prepared ,to give a subsidy. I am of the opinion that in due, course we will have ‘the sendee. Naturally we were anxious to have Hobart included, and we discussed the question; whether the Commonwealth authorities would remove the impost of what. I understand to be - 10s per passenger between Hobart and Melbourne. “ The Government is- in ; earnest; In its desire to have a sendee of a permanent nature established. Some 40 years ago we maintained a , regular weekly service of several steamers, and in the southern portion of New Zealand there is a fixed determination on the part of . the people to have a suitable sendee inaugurated.
