It is stated that the name influenza perpetuates one of the earliest guesses at the origin of the disease—that of the Italians, who blamed the “influence” of the stars for the seventeenth centuryepidemic. There is still an uncertainty as to the causes of influenza, though no no longer looks for them in the stars. The uncertainty is natural enough, so baffling are some of the influenza epidemic. For instance, that of 1889 started simultaneously in Centra] Asia, Greenland, and North-West Canada—’ places thousands of miles apart—and then spread all over the world. The 1918 visitation, one of the most virulent on record—there were as many as 2400 dc .ths from the disease in one week in London alone—raged throughout Europe, the United States, India, jJcw Zealand, and Australia.
