AGREEMENT IN ITALY. NEW PAPAL TERRITORY. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) ROME, February 7. The Pope has telegraphed the Papal Nuncios announcing that an agreement has been , reached .with the Italian Government, which will be signed at the Lateran Palace on Sunday by-Cardinal Gasparri (Secretary of State) ' and Signor Mussolini. The now Papal State will be called Vatican City, and the Vatican will have the right to maintain its railway station, telegraph office, aerodrome, and wireless station, and will be allowed to mint its own money and issue bank notes and postage stamps; and have * other rights of an independent sovereign State.
Offences committed in the Vatican territory will be tried in the Italian courts. : '
The Italian Government has increased the money indemnity from 1,000,000,0004 to 2,000,000,000 „ lire, of which 1,000,000,000 is payable immediately. The application of canon law is a new experiment that has never been tried in a modem State, and the result will, be watched with keen interest throughout the world.
' THE NEW REGIME, . POPE MAY VISIT ENGLAND. ROME, February 7. As soon as the Italo-Vatican agreement is signed the King will pay, a State, visit to the Pope. The latter will celebrate mass in St. Peter’s in honour of the Royal Family. He will then formally call on the King at the Royal Palace. In consequence of the-new regime, diplomats attached to the Vatican will take up residence in the Vatican territory, The Pope most keenly desired the agreement, in order to resume the Ecumenical Council, which was sue* pended 60 years ago, being interrupted first by the Franco-Prussian war, and then by Garibaldi’s march on Rome. The Pope will probably extensively tour the diocese. It is practically certain that he will visit England. His emergence from the Vatican is expected to revive the scenes of mediaeval splendour seen before 1870, when the Pope travelled the Appian Way, his magnificent cortege flanked by picturesquely-uniformed Swiss Guards and cavalry, accompanied by the cardinals. ■ '
