SOUTH OTAGO.
(Special to Djuj-t Times.) BALCLUTHA, December 7. WANTON MISCHIEF. Mr H. E. Pitt, of Greenfield, who has ii large sheep run in the foothills of the Blue Mountains, was out hunting with two friends-from Balclutha one day this week, when suddenly bullets began to whistle overhead, and the party had to run for cover. Observation revealed that the unseen riflemen were not aiming at Mr Pitt's party, but. were shooting wild, and. the bullets were going -too high for deer. When the firing had ceased, Mr Pitt, made investigation, and discovered that the shots had been fired by a "party of five young men from Dunedin, camped in a hut belonging to the Blue Mountain Sawmilling Company. They had tired of hunting the elusive deer, and had been shooting at any mark that presented itself. Evidence of this was found in a. damaged breaking-down saw, part of the equipment of the before-mentioned sawmilling company, which is not a* present operating. The e'aw had two bullet holes clean through the blade, and was ruined for all practical purposes. Mr Pitt and other landowners in the neighbourhood were incensed at the whole incident, which showed a total lack of responsibility on the part of the delinquents and also an ignorance of the laws of hospitality that is surely appalling. The men. were making use of the sawmill company's' hut without so much, as a "by yout leave," and trespassing on a run without asking the owner's permission, and at the same time damaging valuable property and scattering bullets about the landscape without bothering to ascertain if there were any other humans in the vicinity. , KARA POINT CARNIVAL.
