Mr H. T. Shepherd, who has been with the firm of Kerr and Co. in Oamaru for some time past, leaves to-morrow for Napier, where he has received aii appointment with the E.S.L. Mr T. Pile, who has been wharfinger for the Railway Department at Oamaru for a number of years, was presented by the members of the Oamaru Watersiders’ Union with a set of stainless cutlery, prior to his departure for Dunedin on transfer. Mr T. Howard, whp made the presentation and several other members Of the union, referred to the courtesy and consideration that had always been displayed to them by Mr Pile. Mr Thomas Humphries, formerly Surveyor-general, whose death was reported yesterday, was the father of Mr W. F. Humphries, representative of the Union Steam Ship Couipany in Oamaru.

ODDFELLOWS’ RALLY.

A big rally of members of the Manchester Unity Oddfellows is to be held in the Lyric Hall, Oamaru, on Saturday night in connection with the 1000 members’ campaign. Over 200 lodge members from ail parts of Otago and South Canterbury are expetced to be present, and these will be extended an official welcome by the Mayor (Mr Frank Crawshaw). Addresses are to be delivered by P.P.G.M. Bro. Stabb, P.G.M. Bro. Johnston, and P.P.G.M. Bro. Lowry, who will deal with the foundation, growth, and objects of the Order. The gathering promises to be an historic one in the annals of OddfellOwship in North Otago.

RUGBY FOOTBALL,

The Weston Pirates Football Club is to play a match against the Hampstead (Afchburton) Club on the Show Grounds to-morrow. The following players will represent Pirates: —Full-back, Sullivan; three-quarters—Drabble, Diver, L. GOLF. Golfers in North Otago were pleased to learn that the final of the Altar ana (Auckland) championship resulted in a win for B. J. Smith, jun., son of Mr Basil Smith, formerly coach of the North Otago Club. He was «up at the end of the first round, and the match ended on the thirteenth grefen. ~ . The fortnightly meeting of the Oamaru Borough Council was held last evening, there . being present tre Mayor (Mi Frank Crawshaw), Crs J. M. Forrester, W. Wright, W. S. Crombie, E. A. Fox. K. Familton, l H. J. Jenkins, J. M'Diarmid. H. Abbot, H. G. Deal, F. Cooney, J. T. Calder, and J. A. Macpberson. A letter was read from Dr Scott drawing attention to the condition of Weaver street, and complaining of the menace to health caused by the drain in the locality. —lt was decided that the engineer report to the Works Committee oh the matter at its next meeting. Mr F. J. Williams, drainage engineer, wrote handing over the pumping station and Greta street sewage station to the borough. He that the stations were giving every satisfaction. The gas manager reported that lies had been locating old mains, with the object of inserting larger mains. The main finder in use was giving excellent results.

A BOROUGH DUMP.

Mr H. H. Ross, of Thames Highway, advised that a leadlight in his residence had been broken by a stone from the road metal, and he asked that the council replace the window.—Received. On a report received from Senior Sergeant Shanahan, it was decided to Cancel the license of a taxi driver who had recently been fined.

A letter from E. T. Ferris in reference to the condition of A run street was referred to the WOrfcs Committee.

A request from Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. for the construction of a footpath and the removal of storm water in Humber Street in front of their premises was referred to the Works Committee.

Permission was granted to Mr Fischer (sanitary inspector) to attend the sanitary conference \i January next. The Finance Committee reported the following balances:—District fund account, debit £5682 10s 3d; loan account, debit, £247 17s Id; loan account. Bank of New Zealand. £5000; loan account, Post Office Savings Bank, £2OIO. The committtee recommended for payment accounts as follows.—General, £960 4s 2d; loan, £415 6s 2d. The committee stated that authority had been given to write off an account for kerbing and channelling of £5 6s 3d. It recommended that an additional three days’ sickness allowance be paid to T. Devine.—Adopted. The By-laws Committee recommended that the Telegraph Department be granted a special permit under the Motor Vehicles Act regulations to carry loads exceeding 28 feet in length.—Adopted. The Works Committee recommended that the north side of Earn street be kerbed and channelled, and that consent be given to the Wesley Tennis Club to erect a pavilion in wood and iron, the same to remain during the pleasure of the council. The committee stated that G. P. Mollison’s complaint of the condition of the footpath in Greta street had been referred to the chairman aud_ engineers. It recommended that dvains-in-common be allowed in block LXXII. to serve M. O’Brien, and in block LXXX, to serve A. Smith and R. Pollock, subject to the conditions set out in Mr Williams’s reports, and that the application made by A. D. Clarke to connect storm water to the sewer at sections 10-13, block LXXI. be declined. —Adopted. The Reserves Committee recommended that tenders be invited for the erection of conveniences at Ofana Park —Cr Familton asked if the committee had thoroughly considered the plans.—Cr Deal replied in the affirmative, and the report was adopted. The Baths Committee recommended that authority be given for necessary repairs and additional accommodation, and that tenders be invited for painting the building. Mr A. B. Christie was appointed auctioneer to the borough for the ensuing year. Cr Deal reported that Mr J. S. Bain had offered to take the sunshine record at his residence at the top of Tees street. —lt was dcided that the offer be accepted, and that the instruments be placed in Mr Bain’s charge. The condition of the rOad leading from the gardens to Stour street was brought under the notice of the Works Committee by Cr Calder.

The Mayor drew attention to the frequency of sick leave granted to borough employees. He thought the time had arrived when they should put a stop to this kind of thing. The employees were now on the superannuation fund. He moved—" That in future employees on leave be granted, half pay for a month.’’— Cr Wright seconded.—Cr Calder asked if the rule would apply to all employees. —The Mayor said there were old employees who might be dealt with more liberally.—Cr Familton was Of opinion that each case should be dealt with on its merits.—Crs M'Diarmid and Crombie expressed the opinion that they should not have a hard-and-fast rule.—Cr Forrester moved, and Cr MacPherson seconded, as an amendment—" That the question be referred to the Finance Committee fox* a repoi't.”—The amendment; was earned.

The Mayor stated that a portion of an area under lease to a private individual had been planted with trees by the borough staff. The matter had, however, been satisfactorily arranged. The Mayor moved, and Cr Calder seconded That in future the engineer place ingoing asphalt to paths leading to residences.

On the motion of Cr Deal, it was decided that a vote of thanks be passed to J\lr xonng, of Christchurch, for tlbc assistance he had rendered Mr Barnett (curator of the gardens) in the selection of plants.

In answer to a question by Cr M’Diarmid, the town clerk stated that nearly the whole of the larger subscriptions, to the garden fete fuiid had reached him. Replying to a question by Cr Familton, the chairman of the Reserves Committee (Cr Deal) stated that as soon as they had ascertained their full liability in connection with the greenhouse in the guldens, a start would be made with improvements to the children’s plavin" area. ’ ‘ “

At the meeting of the Oamaru Borough Council last evening a petition was road from a number of residents in Lune street, asking that the decision to establish a dump in that locality be reconsidered.

A letter was read from Mr W. Crombie complaining that smoke from the dump had been a great nuisance to him and his neighbours. The Mayor suggested that, in view of j 1 report being received from tiie health officer in regard to the dump, the matter be held Over.

Cr M'Diarmid asked if instruction had been given for no further rubbish to be dumped in the locality in the meantime. The Mayor stated that instructions had been given that no further borough rubbish be deposited there in Die meantime. They could not control private individuals.

Cr Forrester stated that trees and other rubbish had been dumped which were a danger owing to boys visiting the place.

. The Mayor suggested that the engineer place at least 20 yards of spoil on the dump at once. Cr M'Diarmid was not sanguine that the health officer’s report would be of great value. It would probably deal with dumps generally. The Mayor said that Dr Crawshaw was going to give a written report. On the motion of Cr Fox, it was decided that the matter be deferred until next meeting and that the engineer close the dump at once. TAKORA PARK. At last night’s meeting of the Oamaru Borough Council the Mayor stated that he hai reason to think that the portion of land adjoining Takaro Park, formerly used as the Middle School, would now be available as an addition to the park. The terms would be most satisfactory. He. moved —“ That a sub-committee, consisting of Crs Deal and Forrester, wait upon the High School Board at its meeting next week and discuss the question of jiaking the school area an addition to the nark.” The motion was carried.

A violent southerly gale visited Oamaru yesterday afternoon and evening. Damage was done to fences and plantations, while the roofs of several small buildings were lifted. A motor car waa blown over near the cemetery, crashed into a cow shed, and was badly damaged.

Whitebait has begun to run in the Kakanui River, and some fairly good catches have already b»n made at the river mouth.
