(From Our Own Correspondent.) MILTON, July 2. HOCKEY TOURNAMENT. The extremely inclement weather experienced locally last Friday, with snow followed by heavy rain, cailsed postponement until next Saturday of the South Otago Ladies’ Association seven-a-side hockey tournament, which was to have been played on the Milton Club’s grounds. PERSONAL. Consequent on the Education Department’s intention to close the Glenore School the teacher, Miss Pearl Dark, will shortly be transferred to Hinahina School, Owaka district. The Rev. Father Howard is to leave next month to attend the Eucharistic Congress at Sydney, at which representatives will be present - from Roman Catholic Churches throughout the world. After the congress Father Howard intends to visit various parts of Australia. Prior to his departure, the parishioners of his extensive parish—extending from Taieri Ferry to Chaslands—purpose honouring their pastor at a complimentary social. Residents of the Milburn-Clarindon district gathered in strong force of numbers at a complimentary social evening tenH to Mr John Anicich in honour of his approaching marriage. On behalf of the residents Mr William Kirbv presented the guest with two upholstered Morris chairs, and extended felicitations._ Music and dancing filled in the evening. TOKOITI ASSAULT. A special sitting of the Milburn Court was held this morning, before Mr W. Moore., J.P., and Mr D. M. Mawson, J.P., when the charges preferred against a local resident of breaking and entering at Tokoiti and causing bodily harm were again formally adjourned to a special sitting before Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M., on Thursday next The bail of £2OO in his own recognisance and one security of £2CO was renewed, as was the order for suppression of the name of the accused. CLOSING GLENORE SCHOOL. After about three months’ agitation by residents of Glenore district, in arguments for and against closing the local school, official advice has been received that the Education Department has finally decided to close the school, and convey the 17 pupils by motor car to Tokomairiro District High School., The change will take effect shortly. DEFENCE HALL. The local Defence Hall, which has been practically untenanted since the headquarters of Ihe Southern Command were removed to Gore some years ago, is to undergo alterations. The whole of the interior office, formerly used by the Defence Department’s officers, is to be demolished, and a large hall (28ft by 40ft) substituted. Electric lighting is to be installed, and the training operations of local territorials and senior cadets will be conducted in the newly-modelled hsill after the alterations have been effected.
