GRAMOPHONE RECITAL.
A large attendance was attracted to a recital held in Messrs Chas. Begg and Co.,s showroom last evening. A varied selection of the latest records was played on the new re-entrant His Master’s Voice gramophone. The clear and natural tone of the instrument’s reproduction was specially appreciated in vocal numbers. The recital was in the capable hands of Mr Williamson, who prefaced the playing of each record with appropriate remarks. Band items which proved popular were ‘ Zampa Overture,” played by the Coldstream Guards and the “ Third Battalion March ”by the Black Diamond Band. A new electric recording of the famous operatic duet “ Solemne in Quest Ora,” from “ La Forza del destine,” sung by Gigli and de Luca was one of the best items. A harpsichord solo “ The Harmonious Blacksmith,’’was novel. Humorous items were “ Little Betty Bounce,’’ and “ Seventy Years Ago.” Sea chanties were sung by John Goss and the Cathedral Male Quartet.
