OTAGO EARLY SETTLERS’ ASSOCIATION.
The monthly meeting of the committee of the Early Settlers’ Association was held in the board room yesterday afternoon, Mr F. W. Knight (president) in the chair. The following gifts were received and votes of thanks passed to the givers;— From Edward Y. Scott (Waimate), fancy stitched leather belt made by himself; Mrs W. Martin (Wangaloa), bfass plate off captain’s cabin door, s.s. South Australia, wrecked at Coal Point, 1867; Miss Melville (William street), framed oil paintings of her late parents; Mr and Mrs Andrew Melville, Dunedin, Mr Melville. “ King of Italy,” 1861: Mrs Melville (“Hamilla Mitchell”), 1864; F. Waite (Balclutha, per Mr Skinner), very oldtime wooden ladle: Survey Office (Dunedin), number of old maps; Miss Columb (Ross street), copy Evening Star, May 20, 1865, Daily Times, July 4, 1867, January 16, 1873, July 25, 1876, also number of old photographs; J. W. MTntyre (Dunedin), framed portrait of himself (Tamar, 1862) ; John Gillies, jun. (Bruce street), number of old directories; R. J Pope (Wellington), framed portraits of his late parents (Mr and Mrs J. H. Pope, arrived Dunedin 1863); Mrs M. Blackwood (Wallace street), framed poriait of her late mother (Mrs Archibald Macdonald, Dunedin, Philip Laing, 1848); Mrs J. C. Tyson (Musselburgh), large photo group (‘‘Lawmence Old Identities ”1; J. Cole (Lawmence, per R. Norman), very old branding iron used by Mr Cole in the early ’sixties; Alexander Anderson (Herbert), copper token (Jones and Williamson, Dunedin, 1858; Alexander Gilmore (Dunedin), framed family group (brothers, sisters, and self, father). Evening Star, 1860, also a very old meerschaum pipe, much repaired, used by his ‘'ather for over 60 years; Mr M. Souness (Purokireki, per Mrs J. A. Somerville, Waitapeka), old-time candle moulds, as used for making tallow candles m tae early days; Miss J. L. Columb (Dunedin), framed portrait of her late parents (Mr and Mrs C. Columb, Ross street) (Mr Columb, Helmslie, 1863, Mrs Com mb, 1865); P. R. Sargood (Dunedin), framed photo group early New Zealand Governors. The following deaths were reported; Mrs E. Shanks, nee Wilson (Strathallan, 1858); Dr J. M’Phorson (Auckland, late Dunedin, 71) (Gala, 1860); Mrs W. R. Fraser (Waikiwi, Southland, 82, Palmyra, 1858) ; W. L. Kerr (Mokotua, Southland, 82) (Mariner, 1849 J ; L. D. Nicol (Auckland, late Mataura, 83) (Three Wells, 1858) : John Dickson (Milton, 83) (Oscar, 1861); Miss Jura Farquharson (Port Chalmers, 69) (Jura, 1858); William M'Lelland (Miller’s Flat, 88), arrived 1859; Mrs Rosanna Arthur (Dunedin, 91) (Silistria, 1860); John Edie (Law-rence, 73) (Aldinga, 1863); Mrs Ellen Prictor (Petone, late Dunedin, 84 i (Silistria, 1860); Mrs M. J. Johnston (George street. 98) (John Wickliffe, 1848) M. E. M'Lean (home missionary, Beaumont), arrived 1856. The following early settlers were enrolled; —-Mrs R. Clark, nee M. Wallace. 33 Lindsay road, Rockyside, Caversham; Robert Henderson (1862); F. Boyd, Waianawa, Southland (Jane to Bluff, 1863); Mrs F. Boyd, nee Mary Mitchell, Waianawa, Southland (Lady Egidia, 1861); Mrs Alexander Martin, nee Alice A. Wood, 60 Tennyson street (E. P. Bowerie, 1868); Charles Brensscll, Outram (from Victoria, 1862). descendants were also enrolled.
