DECLARED “BLACK.”
COAL MINE RENDERED IDLE. (Special to Dailt Times.) AUCKLAND, June 12. Foote’s mine at Hikurangi has been idle for about a week as the result of its having been declared “ black ” by the local branch of the Miners’ Union, telegraphs the Whangarei correspondent of the Auckland Star. Mr Foote, who has employed 12 men on day wages, proposed that the men should put in a price at which they would work the mine on contract. He made the stipulation that one man should not be included in the party. The man concerned took the matter to the union, which decided that his exclusion could not be allowed. As Mr Foote refused to change his attitude, the union has declared the mine “ black ” until such time -as the miner objected to is included in the party. The situation was discussed at a meeting, but no settlement was reached. Mr Foote has a contract for a supply of coal to the Railways Department, and this is being interfered with by the hold-up.
