COMPENSATION CLAIM.
WAGES WHILE IN GAOL. AN EXTRAORDINARY CASE. (Pee United Peess Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 11. The unusual occurrence of a man claming compensation for wages during a period which he spent in gaol came before the Arbitration Court this morning. The circumstances were that William Briggs, a Lyttelton labourer, had injured his elbow. A few weeks later he was arrested for failing to maintain his wife, and spent three months at Paparua Prison. Briggs claimed compensation for the period during which he was allegedly totally disabled from pursuing his occupation. Counsel for the defence said that it was a most extraordinary thing that a man should claim compensation for wages lost while he was undergoing a term of service to his Majesty* the King. Mr Justice Frazer: It is the first time I have heard of it. Judgment was given for defendant.
