Present: Messrs George Cruiekshank, S.M. (chairman), William Reid (Arrowtown), 0. A. J. Thornton (Glenorchy), Charles Murphy (Alexandra), and L. Faigan (Miller’s Flat), Inspector Bird (Invercargill), and Constable Dunn (Queenstown) represented the police, and Inspector Varney (Alexandra) the Health Department. Messrs Robert Gilkison, jun. (Queenstown), R. Bannerman (Gore), W. Harlow (Clyde), and T. E. Sunderland (Alexandra) appeared in support of the various applications. PUBLICANS’ LICENSES. Renewals. —The following renewals were granted:—Bendigo Hotel. Alexandra (David Provan); Caledonian Hotel, Alexandra (Alexander Riach) ; Jockey Club Hotel, Omakau (Charles H. Drake); Shamrock Hotel, Ophir (Mark J. Hargrave); Commercial Hotel, Roxburgh (Flevie T. Blanchard) : Bannockburn Hotel, Bannockburn (Charles L. Clark); Victoria Hotel, Cromwell (William J. Anderson) ; Golden Age. Hotel, Cromwell (Martin M'Grath); Welcome Home Hotel, Lowburn (Robert Haig); Junction Hotel, Arthur’s Point (Coll Macdonald) ; Mountaineer Hotel, Queenstown (Mary A. Jones); Royal Oak Hotel, Arrowtown (William H. James). ACCOMMODATION LICENSES. Renewals. —The following renewals were granted: —Chatto Creek Hotel, Chatto Creek (Leslie Jones); Shingle Creek Hotel, Shingle Creek (Margaret Galvin) ; Newtown Hotel, Matakanui (Thomas James Truesdale); Nevis Hotel, Nevis (Ellis John Williams); Albion Hotel, Luggate (Mary Agnes Hunt); Mount Earnslaw Hotel, Glenorchy (James C. Knowles); Cardrona Hotel, Cardrona (James D. Paterson) ; Welcome Home Hotel, Long Gully (Henry J. H. Lewis); Garston Hotel, Garston (Michael J. Forde); Railway Hotel, Lauder (Maurice J. Bennison); Ferry Hotel, Lower Shotover (Murdo Urquhart); Ida Valley Hotel, Poolburn (William J. O’Connor). TRANSFERS. Transfers were granted as follows: Publicans. —Grand Hotel, Roxburgh, D. Mulqueen to John Morrison; Royal Oak Hotel, Arrowtown, Mary A. G. Jopp to William H. James. Accommodation.—lda Valley Hotel, Poolburn, W. F. Dundas to William J. O’Connor. OTHER APPLICATIONS DEALT WITH. Criterion Club Hotel, Alexandra (William R. Waters). —The renewal of this publican’s license was adjourned to the September meeting to allow of the Health Department’s requirements in regard to conveniences being carried out. Hartley Arms Hotel, Clyde (Ernest E. H. Rowe). —This application was also adjourned to September in order that certain drainage arrangements might be attended to. Commercial Hotel, Waikaia (Fenwick R. Darling).—Adjourned to September to allow of the police lodging a formal objection to the granting of the license in terms of their report. The Chairman referred to this report as being very unfavourable; and the committee was disposed to regard the matter seriously. The police were being instructed to enter au objection in order that evidence might be taken, as the committee could only act on the sworn testimony. Grand Hotel, Roxburgh.—ln granting the issue of a publican’s license in respect of this house, the committee warned the applicant that it regarded somewhat seriously the recent conviction for selling after hours. It must not happen agaim or applicant would find a difficulty in retaining his license. Wanaka Hotel, Pembroke.—When the renewal of the license for this hotel was being considered the Health Inspector asked that the licensee be asked to provide some protection for the water supply to the premises; also that fire escapes be provided in the two new wings of the building.—The committee gave instructions that wire netting be placed round the water tank to a height of sft, and that a light balcony, with ladder, be erected to connect with ail windows in cadi of the new wings.
