DUNEDIN GUN CLUB.

Special “ open ” handicap sweepstake matches were held at the Dunedin Gun Club’s grounds. Green Island, on Saturday, when some sterling performances were registered. At the outset, a patchy wind tested the shooters’ skill, otherwise the weather conditions were good considering the season of the year. Before proceedings commenced, the President, Mr G. E. Turner, welcomed visiting competitors, representing clubs from Moa Creek, ’Tuatapcre, Invercargill, Palmerston, Oamaru, and Timaru, and during the day all arrangements were made for the comfort of the visitors. Apart from the double rise match, the other contests totalled 54 clay birds, and of these, W. Weavers (Tautapere) broke 53, using_his second barrel on five occasions, R. jviTlwrick (Timaru) broke 52 (three second barrels), E. P. Graham (Dunedin) broke 52 (four second barrels), and J. A. Graham (Dunedin)* broke 50 (three second barrels). In ■ the sweepstakes, T. Callaghan I !•>!,•■ ;ho full number, 33 birds, only using !ih second barrel once. The first match consisted of a 21-Clay Bird Handicap sweepstake of £2 each, and 16 competitors took part. The best scores were: R. MTlwrick (18yds), 21 birds; E. P. Graham (14yds), 21; W. J. Harris, sen. (13vds), 21; W. Weavers (12yds), 21; R. M'Donald (12yds 1, 19; J. A. Graham (14yds), 19; G. E. Turner (14yds), 18; T. J. Henderson (13yds), 17; W. Sutherland (13yds), 17. The prize money was equally divided between R. MTlwrick, E. P. Graham, W. J. Harris, sen., and W. Weavers. In the second handicap, £1 Sweepstake Match of 21 clay birds, 22 competitors were nominated, and the best scores were: T. Callaghan (Hyds), 21 breaks; R. MTlwrick (19yds), 20; R. M'Donald (12yds), 20; W. Weavers (13yds), 20; E. P. Graham (15yds), 19; T. J. Henderson (13yds), 19; J. A. Graham (14yds), 19; H. Shaw (11yds), 19; W. Sutherland (12yds), 19; J. G. Patterson (12yds), 19; D. Jolly (12yds), 19; and M. Douglas (11yds), 17. T. Callaghan won the first prize money outright, and the balance was divided between R. MTlwrick, R. M’Donald, and W. Weavers. The third match provided a Handicap 10s Sweepstake of 12 clay birds, and the best scores were: E. P. Graham (15yds'), 12 breaks; T. J. Henderson (12yds), 12; J. A. Graham (13yds), 12; W. Weavers (13yds), 12; T. Callaghan (13yds), 12; G. E. Turner (13yds), 11; R. MTlwrick (20yds), 11: L. E. Wilson (11yds), 11; R. M'Donald (13yds), 10; and M. Douglas (Hyds), 10. The prize money was equally divided between *E. P. Graham, T, J. Henderson. J. A. Graham, W. Weavers, and T. Callaghan. Much interest was attached to the concluding event, a Six-pair Double-rise Sweepstake. Right and left barrel trapshooting is considered tricky and difficult, especially after the severe strain of the previous contests. However, E. P, Graham (Hyds) finished the task ■with credit, breaking 11 out of 12, and secured first prize money. With nine breaks each, the second prize money was equally divided between W. Weavers (14yds), T. Callaghan (Hyds), and L. E. Wilson (11yds). The other best scores were: R. M'Donald (Hyds), 8; J. A. Graham (14yds), 7; and A. A. Fairbairn (Hyds), 7. Throughout the shoots, the handicapping of Mr E. P. Graham gave entire satisfaction, and the matches were ably controlled by the referee, Mr A. King.
