FANCY DRESS CARNIVAL
After running successfully for over a week, the fancy dress carnival at the Drill Hall was concluded on Saturday night, when the spacious building was filled by a crowd estimated to number about 6000 Throughout the afternoon and evening the stalls and side shows did good business, and the cabaret w. ittended by a record number of mug people. Several new games were introduced, and each met with success. In the afternoon music was provided by the Kapai Orchestra, and the Kaikorai Band played in the evening The tug-of-war cont Opt resulted as follows:—Sixth round; Port Chalmers A beat Port Chalmers B, Logan Park, a bye. Semi-final: Port Chalmers A beat Logan Park. Final: Port Chalmers A beat Port Chalmers B. The competitions resulted as follows: Raffle for Hand-made Cushion.—No. 16, W. Farquharson, Signal Hill. Raffle for Hand-made Tea Cosy.—No. 82, Mrs I. Angus, King Edward street. Girls’ Hard-up Costume. —Ruby Hopcraft 1, Valma Wells 2, Joan Haydon 3. Boys’ Hard-up Costume. —Alec. M'Kay 1, E. Mason 2. Balloon Racing.—D. King 1, W. Donald and A. Hughes (dead heat) 2. Men’s Character Costume.—W. Steward (African explorer) 1, E. James (Bill Sykes) 2. Ladies’ Character Costume.—Doreen Thomas (Old-fashioned) 1, Mrs Goodley (George Wallace) 2. The lucky number on Friday night was 2110. The value of the prizes distributed throughout the carnival was £478. The St. Ambulance Brigade was continually in attendance, but had to attend to only two cases.
