UNIVERSITIES v. WELLINGTON. A WIN FOR THE STUDENTS. (Pee United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 4. A combined Universities’ team chosen from the teams in Wellington for thfc Seddon stick tournament to-day scored a well-merited win over a Wellington representative team by two coals to one. The first half was slow, out the second was interesting throughout, and much faster and provided a better display of hockey. The teams took the field as follows: — Combined Universities —Goal, Green (Otago); full-backs, Barrett (Otago, captain), Brown (Auckland): halves— Massey (Victoria), Radcliffe (Auckland), Brook (Otago); forwards—Fraser (Victoria), Edson (Otago), Simpson (Victoria), Taylor (Auckland), Morris (Otago). Wellington—Goal, Guy; full-backs, O’Callaghan and Spiers; halves—K. Perrin, M'Leod. H. Perrin; forwards—Roberts, Sykes, M’Gavin. Browne, Rouse; emergencies—back Joplin, forward Booth. At half time M’Gavin retired owing to a twisted ankle, and Robb took his place. The game opened slowly, and play was fairly even. The Wellington forwards v.cr- veil up, and things looked dangeron r the Universities- on several occasion From one of those rushes Sykes I\\ i. iimgton) scored. Both goalies had plenty of work to do, but there was no further score before half time. At the opening of the second spell both sets of forwards were getting their share of the ball, and several rushes *ook place, but no score was registered. Universities were attacking hard, and after besieging the Wellington goal three times Massey equalised the score. Universities continued their aggressive tactics, and the halves continued following the forwards at a nice distance, picking up the ball when the forwards lost possession. Superior combination was making itself felt, and the game began to increase in pace, plenty of hard hitting being evident. The Universities’ right-wing. Morris, who showed a useful turn of speed, took the ball from about halfway to the region of the circle, but “ sticks ” relieved. The Universities’ forwards again returned, and Simpson came down into the middle of the circle, but in his excitement, gave an obvious “sticks ” much tr the relief of Wellington. Play went to the other goal and back again for N. Edson (Universities) to find the net from a short rebound from the goalie’s pads, making the score: Universities 2, Wellington 1. Wellington retaliated strongly, and took the ball to the Universities’ goal, but the goalie weathered the storm. Later, Taylor (Universities) made a spectacular run from halfway, but the goalie rose to the occasion, and a following back relieved for Wellington. Wellington took the ball to the other end, but the whistle went without further score. Messrs W. H. Scott and H. J. Smith were the referees.
