CONSUMPTION OF OPIUM
CHANGE BY LEAGUE OF NATIONS’ OFFICIAL. (United Presa Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) GENEVA, April 14. (Received April ID, at 5.5 p.m.) The League of Nations’ opium assessor, Mr L. Lyrill, has called attention to the increasing consumption in. the Malay Federated and Unfederatad States in 1925-26. He accuses the Governments of deliberately increasing the quantity of legal opium in to decrease the quantity of smuggled. Ho added that this action is not in accord with the British Government’s undertaking. Sir Malcolm Delevingne, Deputy Permanent Under-Secretary of State, denies the charge,and states that the Government of Malaya is doing its utmost to reduce the consumption.
Sir Malcolm Delevingne complained of the absence of figures relating to the production and disposal of crude morphine at Formosa.
