SOUTH OTAGO NEWS.
(Fiiom Oun Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA. March 10. EXPENSIVE TRANSFERS. Mr W. G. Stewart, station master at Balclutha. will leave on Friday for his new station at Otahuhu. Auckland, and Mr W. G. Grcig, station master at Clinton, will leave the same day for Xew Plymouth. AFTER RAINBOW TROUT. Messrs G. B. Hutehins and James Willocks, of Owaka, passed through Balclutha this morning on their way to the Manor-burn dam, near Alexandra, for a week's tislving. The dam is reported to be literally teeming with rainbow trout just now, notwithstanding that this is the "' back end " of the season. The Owaka anglers carried a full equipment on a trailer behind their motor car, in the shape of a serviccr.ble-lookir.g boat, with mast and sail, besides tent and all camping essentials. They expect to do most 01 their fishing from the boat, preferably by trolling from the stern, and for this purpose the sail will come in very handy. MONEY L\ T LAMBS. The sheep sale held here on Friday was described by several well-known fanners and others as the best for a number of years, prices having hardened appreciably as the re.-ult of the 2d a lb rise in the price of wool at the Dunedin sales last week. A 3 a result of the increased prices one dealer was enabled to make a midden and unexpected "rise." He had bought a fairly big line of lambs from a farmer in the Kaitangata-Lakeside district, who was running short of feed, a week previously, and offered them at the Balclutha sale on Friday in the expectation of making a modest profit. To the vendor's delight the lamb; realised a price far above his expectations, and he netted well over £2OO on his little deal. PRIME MINISTER'S TOUR. Mr J. G. Coates, accompanied by Mrs Coiites, passed through Balclutha 0:1 the first express from the couth to-day, and wasniet at. the station by the Mayor (Mr S. V. White), who extended cordial greetings on behalf of the citizens. Mr K. S. Williams (Minister of Public Works) is expected to pay an official visit to Balclutha in the near future. RAM FAIR. Judging from the number of district fihecp breeders who have decided to offer their rams for sale at the ram fair next week, the number of entries should be much larger than usual. The idea behind the stimulus that is being given to the fair, and which originated with the breeders themselves, is to get purchasers to come to Balclutha and buy their young stud rams on the epot. This course will render unnecesary a lot of the trucking and handling, attendant on sending the rams away to outside markets, and should prove advantageous.
