PERSONAL.
Ministerial. Mr W. Downie Stewart (Minister of Finance and Customs) arrived in Dunedin on Saturday afternoon, accompanied by his private secretary (Mr i. G. Matthews), and will remain nere for two weeks. The Mayor (Mr W. B. Taverner) has returned to Dunedin. . Mr H. A. White went north by train on Saturday to attend the conference of the Institute of Optometrists of New Zealand, to be held at Auckland this week. The Rev. W. B. Scott left Dunedin on Saturday for Christchurch to attend the Methodist Conference. Dr A. R. Falconer was a passenger by the north express on Saturday, on his way to Hamilton, where the Medical Conference will be held. Sir George Fenwick and Mr C. Stanley Smith went north on Saturday, bound for Wellington, where the annual meeting of the New Zealand Press Association will be held to-day.
Mr W. Easton left on Saturday for Wellington to attend a meeting of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association. Dr A. J. Hall left by the first express on Saturday for Wellington en route to Hamilton, where lie will attend the Medical Congress. He will also visit Rotorua, and will return to Dunedin in about 10 days’ time. An Auckland Press Association telegram announces the death of Mr R. C. Carr, late director of the New Zealand Insurance Company, and a well-known old colonist.
Captain H. S. Hilton, marine superintendent Canadian Government Merchant Marine, with headquarters at Auckland, is making his first visit to Dunedin. Captain Hilton, who is accompanied by Mr P. G. V/ood, assistant to the Australasian manager, arrived from Bluff yesterday by the Canadian Challenger.
