ST. KILDA COUNCIL

FIRST MEETING OF NEW YEAR. A meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council was held last night, and was attended bv the Mayor (Mr R. W. Hal!) and Crs J. Beattie. C. Conn, -I. Fleming, F. Oiilarn, H. H. Leary, J. D. M’Curdy, T. D. Roy, G. Stratton, R. Telfer, J. Longwoi th. Mr 11. Nyhon (Broad Bay) wrote suggesting that the route for driving stock to Burnside bo through the Bay View road and past the brick kiln into Caversham. —The council agreed to "the alteration. The Secretary of . the Otago Foothqll Association wrote stating that his committee had decided to relevel the surface of Culling Park to make it suitable for Association football. —A letter was received from the same body stating that the Management Committee had every intention of executing the agreement to lease. The association had no copy of the agreement, and would be glad to have one without further loss of time. —The Mayor reported that the lease was ready to be signed. ' The Medical Officer of Health wrote drawing attention to the unsatisfactory svale of the convenience at Culling Park. The writer understood that the council intended to acquire the corner for road widening and that the convenience would he demolished. He strongly recommended the immediate removal of the present convenience.—lt was reported that the trustees of Culling Park had agreed to the widening of the corner and that the work would be carried on without delay. A deputation of residents of Council street waited on the council urging that before kerbing and channelling work was done the width of the street bo reduced and provision made for a grass strip in front of the houses. —Mr J. W. Dove stated that the street need not he wid”. as it would never become an arterial road. It would not he necessary to leave a great deal of room for the parking of cars outside the hall. —Mr J. Crosbie Smith stated that it was proposed to form an amenities society in the borough, and tne full encouragement of the council was desired. —The Mayor stated that a previous council had decided that Council street should remain at its present width. The council was looking to the future and considering the safety of the public. Room must be left foi the parking of cars. —Mr Dove drew attention to the unsatisfactory condition of Alexandra Park, the Mayor replying that the grass would he cut in the course of a few days and that a mower had been ordered from England.-—The matter of reducing the width of Council street was considered in committee, and it was decided to leave about two chains of the street approaching the main road at the original width and reduce the width of the remainder to 26ft. It was reported that the water consumption from December 19 to January 60 was 12,577,000 gallons, costing £314 8s fid. It was decided that the Mayor attend the Grcymonth jubilee functions, which are to he held from February 25 to March 3.
