The assets are valued at £10,102. William Madison Alt, extradited from Honolulu, arrived at Auckland by the Aolangi yesterday to answer three charges of false pretences (alleged bogus motor sales) in -connection, -with a-, motor engi. necring - 'Business at Drury and Papakuia. • Thirty-Tongan boys, membeis of a cnon to four Australia, arrived at Auckland by the Aorangi. A remand on bail was granted. WANGANUI, January 30. William Hector O’Hara, who eold liquor to Maoris wiio were competing in canoe races at the recent motor boat regatta, was fined £25 in the Police Court to-day. Robert Jamieson, a confectioner, on the information of the chief city inspector, was fined £l2 for failing to keep dean premises in which confectionery was manufactured. , WELLINGTON, January 30. J. Stacden and D. Gray, the Australian cyclists, arrived here this morning on a tom of tne Dominion. Both have been selected for the Olympic Games. A boy’s clothes left at Evans Bay bathing sheds on Sunday have been claimed, with the explanation that, not being able to find them, the owner had returned u his bathing suit. A search was made on Sunday evening and. this morning, oy the Kilbirnie police and members of the Evans Bay Swimming Club for the boy who was supposedly drowned in the harbour. GREYMOUTS, January 30. Francis Joseph Ruane was to-day charged with the attempted murder of his wife by poisoning, and also with attempted suicide and with attempting to cause annoyance and injury to Irene Margaret Bernhard and - Elizabeth Ruane by administering poison, to wit. laudanum. He -pleaded guilty to ittempted suicide. The accused’s wife gave evidence that the accused, when intoxicated, placed laudanum in two cups just when tea was being nrepa’eu . m also took a teaspoonful Himself. The Government analyst’s report showed that the quantity of laudanum placed in the cups was not sufficient to cause death. The magistrate, Mr W. Meldrum. held that a jury would not convict on :tie attempted murder charge in view of the cuantitiy of laudanum b»im jr-"'' l, i°ss than would have proved fatal, and therefore dismissed that charge. On the other char re tile accused was ordered to come up for sentence if called on within 12 months, and also to report monthly to the police and submit to a prohibition order.
