FIRE ENGINE SMASH.
COLLISION WITH TAXI CAB. NO SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES. iPee United Pbess Association.) WELLINGTON, January 27. A sensational collision occurred to-day between a fire engine which was speeding to an outbreak in Sydney street and a taxi cab. The accident took place at the entrance to the Queen’s wharf, a notoriously dangerous spot. In attempt ing to avoid the taxi cab the engine was capsized, and all the firemen were thrown clear, fortunately escaping injury with the exception of J. Philp, who landed on his head, and was sent to the hospital, but was aftei wards taken to the brigade station. Petherick, the driver, and Leadbrook, the officer in charge, were imprisoned between the engine and the taxi, and could not be liberated till the engine was replaced on its wheels. Both were cut ana bruised, but were not, seriously hurt. The traffic officer leaped from his platform just in time to avoid the engine, which crossed over it. The engine was somewhat damaged, but the taxi and its occupants suffered little. The outbreak to which the engine was travelling was found to be in gorse. A second engine attended to the blaze.
