A SMART CAPTURE.
OPIUM SMUGGLER CAUGHT. SELLING DRUG TO CHINESE. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, January 2 Detective Nalder effected a smart arrest yesterday when he caught John Cornn, aged 42j with four tins of opium concealed under his singlet. This morning the accused, who is a seaman on the Uli mora, which arrived in port on Tuesdaylast from Sydney, appeared before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., when he pleaded guilty to a charge of having unlawfully imported opium into the Dominion. The Collector of Customs (Mr A. V. Penn), who prosecuted, said that Corrin brought the opium ashore from the Ulimaroa in four tins. The opium was fully prepared, and was worth £l2 for each £lb tin. The accused had informed him that he had been given ihe opium by Chinese in Sydney to sell n Auckland on commission. When discovered by the detective Corrin was ~ndeavouring to dispose of the opium in a Chinese laundry. Mr Penn added that the maximum fine was £IOO. “ These are the men who are the real source of all trouble. They do not smoke it, but trade it,” said Detective Hammond, who added that Corrin had cabled to Sydney for £SO. “Well,’ he will be fined that sum, which is naif the maximum,” said the magistrate.
